Where Learning Meets Healing
|
September always brings a welcome shift to our campus — the walkways fill, the coffee lines grow and that unmistakable energy returns along with our students. I know I’m not the only one who looks forward to it.
We know ours is a special community, as UC San Diego Health Sciences is the only academic medical center in the region. And our institution is recognized not only for its research excellence and world-class health care but also for its academic rigor.
We kick off this 2025-26 academic year with more than 1,460 students across our three schools, and look to build on the past year’s successes. From our hospitals to our academic programs, UC San Diego Health Sciences consistently ranks among the top in the nation, reflecting the strength and integration of our mission in education, discovery and patient care.
Experiential learning is more than a buzzword here — it’s a daily reality for our students and trainees. And what an exciting environment this is!
Here are just a few examples of how teaching and learning within Health Sciences also advance patient care:

-
Through rotations at UC San Diego Health and other community health programs, the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science establishes a connection to medicine via the General Preventive Medicine Residency program. Residents train at a variety of clinical sites — including community and student health centers — that serve underserved populations, immigrants and refugees.
- Students and faculty at Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have provided more than 1,000 health screenings across San Diego over the past two years.
-
UC San Diego School of Medicine students enrolled in MED-235 observe physicians at the Indian Health Council in Pauma Valley. The clinic provides on-site and outreach services and programs to the North San Diego County reservations.
-
Pharmacy and medical students alike provide critically needed services to patients at our Student-Run Free Clinic Project.

We are bolstered by our position within the broader University of California system and benefit from strategic alliances across the state. UC Health comprises five full academic medical centers, forming the largest health sciences educational system in the nation.
As we look ahead, the strength of our collective efforts within our campus and across the UC system sets the stage for what’s to come. Here’s to a new academic year — one filled with new discoveries, meaningful connections and continued excellence in all you do!

Legends of Science and Surfing |
Since 1994, the San Diego community has united each year for the Legends of Science and Surfing event in support of Moores Cancer Center. This year marked an exciting milestone with the inaugural Legends of Science Oncology Symposium on Friday, Sept. 12, which brought together internationally recognized experts sharing advances in cancer research. To date, the event has raised more than $12 million to support cancer care. "In space, stem cells decline in function. They actually reduce their ability to renew themselves or regenerate, and that’s an important thing to be able to know for long-term space missions. … If our stem cells become exhausted under conditions of stress like microgravity, then they won’t function to make a proper immune system."
— Catriona Jamieson, director of the Sanford Stem Cell Institute and professor of medicine, School of Medicine, on the first study of its kind to look at stem cell behavior in space based on four International Space Station resupply missions
