Village Budget: What Do You Pay – and What Do You Get – for Village Services
|
Everyone wants good value when making a purchase. But determining whether you’re getting a good deal requires knowing what you pay and what you receive in return.
The Village strives to provide you with excellent value and high-quality services for your investment.
|
Taxes support services that benefit the entire community.
What You Pay
|
-
A typical single-family household pays the Village $645 per year in property taxes – or $54 per month. That’s less than a typical monthly single-line cell phone bill ($70) or car insurance payment ($67).
-
The Village also collects up to 2.25 cents in sales tax per dollar on taxable purchases in Skokie. Collecting revenue through sales and other purchase taxes helps shift some of the cost of providing Village services from residents to visitors.
|
What You Get
Your taxes fund essential services, including:
|
- 24/7 police, fire and emergency medical response
- Traffic lights and street lighting
- Snow and ice control
- Street cleaning
- Infrastructure investments (street resurfacing and multi-use trails)
- Tree planting and trimming
- Free compost drop-off sites
-
Community health programs (flu shots, screenings)
- Rat abatement
- Public communications (The Scoop, NewSkokie, and Smart911)
- Community events, like the Skokie Farmers’ Market
- And more
|
🚛 Trash, Recycling and Yard Waste Fees

What You Pay: A typical single-family household pays $9.25 per month (billed quarterly) — less than the cost of a typical streaming service.
What You Get: Year-round weekly collection of trash and recycling items from your home, and seasonal weekly yard waste collection.
|
What You Pay: $7.64 per 100 cubic feet (748 gallons) of water – approximately one cent per gallon. A typical household uses around 300 gallons a day.
What You Get: High-quality drinking water delivered through the Village’s water system – at the second lowest rate in the area.

Help Shape How You Use the Village of Skokie Website
|
The Village is updating its website, and we want YOUR input on how it's organized.
Why it matters: A well-organized website helps residents quickly find what they need—whether it's paying a bill, reporting an issue, or learning about local programs.
What’s happening: We're forming a focus group to test how information is grouped and labeled on the new site. This is not about the look of the website or what is included on the website, but about how easy it is to navigate.
Details: Sessions will be held in person at Village Hall and will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes
What to do: Interested in helping? Fill out this short form to tell us about yourself and your availability.
