The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is notifying healthcare providers of the first human avian influenza A (H5N1) cases in California and urging preparedness for the upcoming respiratory virus season. As of October 10, 2024, CDPH has detected four cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) in workers at dairy facilities in the Central Valley of California. Providers should consider avian influenza A virus infection in symptomatic patients with exposure to livestock or birds (including backyard poultry). The CDPH advisory also includes disease-specific guidance on SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
