Today I am proud to announce two developments that demonstrate Muhlenberg’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
First, we have learned that the Fahy Commons for Public Engagement and Innovation, dedicated a year ago, has become the first building in the world to achieve Core Living Building Certification — an extraordinary achievement in sustainable design. This certification sets exceptionally high standards by requiring regenerative systems, resource self-sufficiency, and a positive impact on human and natural systems. This is one of several such distinctions the Fahy Commons has achieved. You can read more about this achievement here.
Second, Muhlenberg has signed an agreement to bring a cutting-edge, large-scale solar facility online in western Kentucky. The College’s share in the project will offset 100 percent of our electricity usage, effectively reducing our greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation to zero. We are collaborating on this 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with eight other colleges and universities in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, including neighboring Lafayette College and Lehigh University, to access the benefits of renewable energy through a deal typically only feasible for large customers.
In consultation with Coho, an ERM Group Company, our institutions are working with NextEra Energy Resources, the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and sun, and a world leader in battery energy storage. The collaboration also brings opportunities for students to engage in first-hand experiential learning with NextEra Energy Resources. Muhlenberg will receive access to data from the Sebree Solar II project for classroom use as well as campus speaking engagements, site visits and student internships. The Sebree Solar II project is set to begin construction in early 2025 and commence commercial operation by the end of 2026. You can read more about this effort here.
This initiative was introduced in 2019 through the College’s Sustainability Committee, and spearheaded by Kent Dyer, David Rabold, Kalyna Procyck, Jim Bolton and Rich Neisenbaum. Sustainability Specialist Natalie Sobrinski, Director of Plant Operations Jim Bolton and Chief Financial Officer Curt Topper have been essential in moving this project across the finish line. Please join me in expressing appreciation to them and all those involved in this successful launch!
Our institutional values commit us to being good citizens of the Earth, and to making institutional decisions that are mindful of our complex relations with the ecosystem. I am proud of our community for recognizing this need and actively engaging in partnerships that contribute to a better future for all.
Sincerely,
