Tulane University

Dear Tulane Community,

Hurricane season begins June 1 and lasts through November 30.

The Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response has established a comprehensive policy to guide the university's response to severe weather events, including hurricanes that may require either evacuation or sheltering in place.

This policy reflects thoughtful collaboration across the university and is grounded in our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of our community.

As part of this policy, all faculty, staff, and students are required to develop a personal evacuation plan in advance. These plans must be designed to be carried out independently, without relying on university resources.

When the university issues an evacuation order, students will be expected to activate their personal evacuation plans. Students who are unable to do so may, where possible, receive evacuation assistance from the university.

Priority for university-assisted evacuation will be given to:

  • On-campus students with financial need
  • Students with disabilities, access and functional needs (DAFN)
  • International students
  • Any student unable to carry out a personal evacuation plan

As you complete your required personal evacuation plan, please review and stay familiar with the university's hurricane evacuation policy.

To assist students with implementing their personal evacuation plans, the university may provide shuttles to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), if resources are available and it is safe to do so. For hurricane evacuations, airport shuttles begin several days before the storm's landfall and continues as long as circumstances permit.

The complete evacuation policy can be found here. It is the responsibility of all members of the Tulane community to familiarize themselves with this policy.

Students, please update your personal evacuation plan in Gibson. Examples of personal evacuation plans are:

  • Travel by air to your hometown or a city where you have friends or relatives you could stay with for several days.
  • Be picked up from campus by parents, friends or relatives.
  • Evacuate with friends or roommates.

Thank you for your compliance with this policy and for doing your part to be hurricane ready.
