Drinking Brecht: An Automated Laboratory Performance

After stealing a hat from the costume collection of famous communist playwright Bertolt Brecht, multimedia artist sister sylvester embarks on a forensic quest to trace the hat’s possible past wearers. Paying homage to Brecht’s “Scientific Theater,” which endeavored to spark revolution, Drinking Brecht is an innovative interactive documentary using microbiology and genetics to merge past and present.

"A documentary that you can drink, the work ingests worn-out scientific narratives and transforms them into a Marxist-feminist ritual and a celebration of science for the people,” says sister sylvester.

Drinking Brecht is a 60–70 minute interactive installation featuring a projected film and three audience-led experiments. Working in small groups, participants complete a hands-on biohacker experiment that ultimately becomes a cocktail, bringing the scientific process full circle in an unexpected and playful way.

The experience is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available through Eventbrite. Attendees must be 21 or older.

DA212: A Contemporary Dance Company Experience with Safos Dance Theatre

Join choreographer Yvonne Montoya, a 23rd generation Nuevomexicana with deep roots in Northern New Mexico, in Block 5 (DA212) as she explores this question through creative research and dance performance. Montoya grew up with the multigenerational communal and familial practice of picking piñón.

The unfortunate yet inevitable loss of the endangered and culturally significant piñón trees will be the catalyst for exploration of cultural practices, identities through storytelling, and movement. The dance created in Block 5, and performed in Block 6, investigates Southwestern querencia through the lens of land and embodied connections to the environment. Intersecting the intercultural practice of piñón picking with scientific research on climate change, this dance begs the question: Who are we when the piñón trees vanish?
