In MU227: Songwriting, Dr. Ever Reyes's extraordinary group of CC songwriters took on the ambitious challenge of writing multiple songs in just three weeks. Students had the opportunity to record their original pieces as demos and perform them for their peers. Along the way, students explored both Western music theory and the philosophical side of creativity, learning that songwriting is an iterative process, never quite finished and always becoming. Rather than just focusing on a final product, students learned that the struggle of engaging in the creative process is part of the journey and magic of creativity.

STUDENTS: Sign up now for Urinetown auditions! Prepare 32 bars or less of a song in the style of the show, memorized if possible. Humorous, pop musical theater or something similar encouraged. You must provide piano/vocal sheet music with clearly marked cuts for the pianist. You will be asked back at 7 p.m. on Sept. 28 to read/sing from the show.

Explore the body as the artist’s instrument in this experiential workshop focused on
alignment and postural control, psycho-physical positioning, mindfulness, and quieting the mind with the aim of enhancing the artist’s well-being. Designed specifically for performers in theatre, dance, and music, guest artist/scholar Dr. Larissa Kelloway offers practical tools for cultivating greater presence, freedom, awareness, responsiveness in performance, and self-care.

MU162: The Collegium Musicum is welcoming new members who read music and are interested in exploring the world of Baroque and Renaissance music. The ensemble meets on Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m. in Packard, Room 9, and boasts a low stress environment with great performance opportunities. Collegium explores both large ensemble and chamber music. Norbert McGettigan ’19 began playing bass at CC and joined the Bluegrass Ensemble during his sophomore year. According to Bluegrass Director Keith Reed, “He practiced all the time!” Apparently, it paid off, because Norbert is now the bassist for Grammy Award winner Zach Top. Norbert also met his fiancé Clare Ende ’19 in the Bluegrass Ensemble. Clare is a Licensed Master of Social Work and therapist in Nashville. Both Norbert and Clare were music minors at CC proving that you just never know where music can take you!

Many thanks to our outgoing chair, Ryan Bañagale, for his incredible service over the last four years! And, a big welcome to our new chair Iddo Aharony. Iddo is an experimental musician, sound artist, and listener, exploring within the myriad intersections of sound, environment, culture, and technology. His body of work spans a wide variety of instrumentations and media, from a fully-staged opera to various projects utilizing live electronics and environmental sound. These projects are often created together with visual artists, theatre creators, poets, and scientists, as well as other musicians and sound-makers. His CC course offerings include Digital Music Production, Environment and Sound, Experimental Music, Projects in Digital Music, and experimental courses in which students get to collaborate with creators in other disciplines as well as with various communities in Southern Colorado. Don’t miss the chance to experience his work, which will be featured in the upcoming Fine Arts Center exhibit "Here and Now, Then and Always," opening Oct. 2. In collaboration with Theatre & Dance professor Pallavi Sriram, NY-based artist Jessica Segall, and musician Matthew Langford, Iddo captured field recordings and gathered materials from a very windy, five-day visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Together they have created a large-scale audiovisual installation for the exhibit titled “does the wind ever get tired”.
