MEET DR. Z., NASA'S FORMER HEAD OF SCIENCE

The Consulate General of Switzerland and Swissnex in San Francisco will welcome the world-renowned Swiss-American astrophysicist Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen for a special talk about the role that teamwork plays in innovation and in pushing scientific boundaries in the field of space research. 
Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, known as Dr. Z., was the longest continuously-serving Head of Science at NASA and is known for his leadership and his efforts in the launching of the James Webb Space Telescope.
His talk will be followed by a conversation with science journalist Dr. Nadia Drake and will be concluded by a moderated Q&A with the audience.
This event will be an exceptional opportunity to follow a dynamic and passionate conversation about space research and humanity's pursuit of knowledge.

GOLDEN YEARS WINS BERLIN & BEYOND FILM FESTIVAL'S 2023 AUDIENCE AWARD

The Swiss film Die goldenen Jahre (Golden Years), directed by Barbara Kulcsar and written by Petra Volpe, won the 2023 Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Berlin & Beyond Film Festival.
With the support of the Consulate General of Switzerland, the film was screened in San Francisco as part of Berlin & Beyond's lineup of German-language films.


The screening, which was followed by an on-stage exclusive interview with screenwriter Petra Volpe (Director of The Divine Order), drew in a diverse crowd of film afficionados, whose enthusiastic reception of the movie led to the film's winning of the Audience Award.

DOROTHEE ELMIGER'S

OUT OF THE SUGAR FACTORY

The award-winning Swiss author Dorothee Elmiger will be the guest of a talk along with American journalist Jori Lewis at the Bay Area Book Festival. The conversation will touch upon the topics of the longstanding effects and implications of slavery and the global sugar trade. Dorothee Elmiger will also present her newest release, Out of the Sugar Factory, which was shortlisted for both the German Book Prize and the Swiss Book Award. This novel, while following the journey of its protagonist (also named Dorothee Elmiger) through her obsessive collecting of objects related to the violent history of the global sugar trade, is both grounded in historical fiction and self-reflective.
