Summer in Pennsylvania brings sunshine, outdoor activities, and afternoon thunderstorms.

Lightning is one of the most common weather hazards this time of year, making it important to know how to stay safe when storms develop.
The good news is that lightning safety is simple. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. The safest place to be is inside a building or a hard-topped vehicle.
If a thunderstorm is approaching, do not wait for rain to begin. Head indoors as soon as you hear thunder. Once inside, stay away from windows and doors, avoid using corded electronics, and wait until the storm passes before showering, washing dishes, or using other plumbing fixtures.
Outdoor activities are a big part of summer, but they can also increase your risk during a storm. If you are swimming, boating, fishing, or spending time near water, get out of the water immediately and seek shelter. Open fields, hilltops, and isolated trees are also dangerous places to be during a thunderstorm.
After the storm passes, be patient before heading back outside. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before resuming outdoor activities.

Never hold fireworks in your hand while lighting them and never re-light a firework that does not go off.

- Before heading inside, make sure all flames are completely out. Use water or sand for fire pits and follow safety steps for your grill.

June is Pet Preparedness Month, making it a great time to check that you have everything your pet may need during an emergency. Just like you have an emergency kit for yourself, your pets need one, too!

Food and Water: Pack at least a week's worth of food and water. Don’t forget bowls and a manual can opener.
- Medications and Medical Records: Make sure you have a week's supply of any medications your pet needs, along with their medical records.
- First Aid Kit: Include basics like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers.
- Comfort Items: A few toys, blankets, and treats can help keep your pet calm.
- Sanitation Supplies: Bring litter and a litter box for cats and waste bags for dogs.

Make sure your pet wears an updated ID tag and consider microchipping if you have not already done so. It is also helpful to identify pet friendly shelters, hotels, or friends and family members who could help if you need to leave home quickly.
