Visit the 77th Student Independent Exhibition

Now in its 77th year, the Cleveland Institute of Art's Student Independent Exhibition (SIE) is an honored tradition that’s never conventional. Organized entirely by students, who choose the jurors and mount the exhibition, SIE offers fresh—and sometimes surprising—approaches to contemporary art. The show is on view through March 19, and jurors included Susan Danko '98 and Erykah Townsend '20. View a list of prize winners here.

2023 Alumni Exhibition submissions open soon

It is with great excitement that CIA's Alumni Council announces the 2023 Alumni Exhibition: Come Rest Here by My Side. The show will run from July 14 through August 11 in Reinberger Gallery. Submissions will be accepted from April 1 through May 22, and all alumni are encouraged to apply. All mediums are welcome. This year's exhibition committee members are Cherie Bauer '81, Deborah Pinter '88, Lauren Chaikin '09, Karen Sandstrom '12 and Amani Williams '21. More details coming soon!

Cuffaro '91 shares sabbatical work in new exhibition

Spend your lunch hour hearing from Dan Cuffaro '91, the Anne Fluckey Lindseth Professor and chair of CIA's Industrial Design Department, during Lunch on Fridays at 12:15pm Friday, March 3 in CIA's Peter B. Lewis Theater. Cuffaro will discuss And this is what I do ..., his exhibition of sabbatical-related work focused on entrepreneurship and its influence on the CIA Industrial Design curriculum.
And this is what I do ... will open from 5 to 7pm Friday, March 3 in the Ann and Norman Roulet Student + Alumni Gallery. It will remain on view through Sunday, March 26. It includes Cuffaro's most current product development work, past projects and the work of four students focused on bringing products to market before graduation.

In Our Skin on view through March 5

The Cleveland Institute of Art Black Scholars and Artists (BSA) inaugural Black History Month exhibition, In Our Skin, allows the audience to join discussions of colorism, racial disparities, bias, development and their connections to gentrification, beauty standards and the defiance of the social “norm.” Visit the show in the Alan Lipson Gallery through March 5.

Alum shows designs at Cleveland Auto Show 

CIA's Industrial Design students and faculty visited the Cleveland Auto Show to hear from alum and Chief Designer for Ram Interior Studios, Ryan Nagode '03. Nagode discussed design work on the Ram Revolution, a new electric truck by Stellantis. See photos of the visit here. Nagode was a guest on Kickin’ it with Kenny on Cleveland's Fox 8 News and was featured on Spectrum News 1.

CIA artists awarded OAC excellence awards

Congratulations to the CIA artists who received Individual Excellence Awards from the Ohio Arts Council! George Kozmon '82, Guy-Vincent '83Judy Takács '86Greg Martin '89Lori Kella '97, student Crystal Miller, faculty member Jessica Pinsky and faculty emeritus Brent Kee Young were among the 75 Ohio artists recognized
Individual Excellence Awards are recognition of artists’ bodies of work that exemplify specific disciplines and advance the larger creative community. These awards support artists' growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and their cultural influence beyond the state. During this funding cycle, applications in crafts, design, interdisciplinary arts, media arts, photography, visual arts 2D and visual arts 3D were accepted.

Show celebrates Glass innovation at CIA

Fifty years after the Glass program began, Risk + Discovery: Glass Innovation at CIA aims to celebrate glass in all its forms, drawing connections to the unique learning environment of the college and its influence on the creative vocabulary of the region and beyond. The exhibition will feature work by makers working in glass or whose creative practice was influenced by the program’s pedagogy, including current and former CIA faculty, technical specialists, alumni and students.

Risk + Discovery: Glass Innovation at CIA will open from 6 to 8pm on April 6 in Reinberger Gallery. It will remain on view through June 16.

Ron Testa '65 will have work in the Annual Member Showcase at Praxis Photo Arts Center In Minneapolis from March 18 to April 1. 
Thomas Roese '71 had three drawings added to the permanent collection of the Wright Museum of Art in Beloit, Wisconsin.
Mary Urbas '80 curated from WOMAN XVI… Created by women, of women & about women on view at the Gallery at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. The show includes work from Diana Bjel '73Judy Takács '86Jaymi Zents '97Delinda Mariani '99Leigh Brooklyn '11, Kimberly Chapman '17 and Deborah Silver '21. A reception will take place March 26 from 3:30 to 5pm.
Anne Kmieck '83 has a solo show In Confidenza: Secrets and Transcendence at the Trinity Commons Gallery in Cleveland through March 31. 
Paul Dacey '84 had a painting added to the permanent collection of the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio. The work appears in Seeing Stars, Divining Futures at the museum through June 20. 
Lucia De Marinis '84 has work in Mapping Space and Time, an exhibition of works on paper at Preston Square in Ottawa, Canada through March 23. 
William Moore '84 has work in ANTI-War 2023 with Biafarin & Exhibizone Exhibitions in Toronto. A sculpture, "Avian Preflight Check," will appear in the March edition of Artistonish. 
Pamela Argentieri '87 and CIA Craft + Design faculty member Matthew Hollern were invited to participate in an exhibition organized by 4BYSIX, a community interest company using creative means to support the disadvantaged and homeless, in London as part of the Break in Emergency series. Artists transformed decommissioned London bus panels into artwork.
Karen Beckwith '87 has work in Trace Evidence: Observations of Place at BAYarts in Bay Village, Ohio through March 3.
Melinda Placko '00 has been named associate director of music and visual arts at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Ohio. 
Alison O'Daniel '03 will show her film, The Tuba Thieves, at the Cleveland International Film Festival on Monday, March 27 at 5:00pm at the Mimi Ohio Theater in Cleveland. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Molly Fitzpatrick '05 was featured in an article with Fast Company Magazine.
Georgio Sabino III '09 had work in the Ohio Artist Registry 2023 Juried Exhibition at the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Columbus.
Adrienne Di Salvo '10 will do a coldworking glass demonstration, “It’s what’s inside that counts,” at the 2023 Glass Art Society Conference from June 7 to 10 in Detroit. 
Leigh Brooklyn '11 has work in solo show Battlescars, The New Protagonist at Mansfield Art Center in Mansfield, Ohio from March 16 to April 18 and Her Story at Virgil Catherine Gallery in Chicago. Work will also be featured in featured in a special edition of the book Artelibre through Mod Portrait at the MEAM in Barcelona, Spain.
Katy Richards '11 will have work in a solo show, Katy Richards: Pocket Full of Posies, at HEDGE Gallery in Cleveland from March 15 to April 28. 
Emily Hromi '14 recently completed an indoor mural in the STEAM Lab at Bunker Elementary School in Muskegon, MI.
Nolan Beck-Rivera '15 was a guest on Ideastream Public Media's The Sound of Ideas. 
Nolan Meyer '20 was the first artist resident of feverdream, a new residency program established in 2022 in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. Meyer's painting, "Lighthouse," was transformed into a 38ft mural, part of feverdream's new rotating mural system on The Shoreway Building in Cleveland's Gordan Square Arts District neighborhood. Maxmillian Peralta '21 is a founder and program director with feverdream.
Renaissance Bernard '21 will have a solo show, A Contemporary Renaissance, at ArtSeen Gallery in Rockville, Maryland from May 21 to June 30. 
Betty Rozakis '21 will have work exhibited at Artexpo New York from March 30 to April 2 with Philip Josef Glass Art Gallery.
