Midsummer has arrived, bringing afternoon monsoons and growing anticipation as we prepare to welcome students back next month. At the Center of Southwest Studies, we've had a full and rewarding season with visiting researchers, ongoing projects, public programs, community tours, and a major reorganization of our collections storage areas.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Golden Grads Alumni Celebration and our annual Summer Solstice Window Viewing in the early morning hours of June 21. The celebration continued with a wonderful Sunrise Cyanotype Workshop led by Olivia Perea, Mellon Collections Research & Education Fellow.

30 YEARS OF DURANGO TOONS
A Retrospective of Political Cartoonist Judith Reynolds

Congratulations to Judith Reynolds on this amazing exhibition of political cartoons spanning several decades and numerous reproductions of original drawings from the Judith Reynolds' Durango Herald Collection (M251) from the Center Archives. | GRANT AWARD
The Center has been awarded a grant from the Colorado Statewide Internet Portal Authority to complete the final phase of processing 8,328 TIFF files of The Independent, Fort Lewis College's (FLC) student newspaper, and make them publicly accessible through the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. Building on a successful partnership with the Colorado State Library, this project will expand access to these invaluable historical records, preserving decades of student voices while documenting the evolving relationship between FLC and surrounding communities.

The Center Archives is undertaking a major project to organize and improve access to its collection of several hundred historic and rare maps. Overseen by Archives Manager, Nik Kendziorski, and aided by Fort Lewis College alumnus Phil DeHudy (History) and long-term Center volunteer Tom West, this project will enhance the long-term preservation of these important resources through creation of an inventory system, updating of finding aids, conservation through humidifying and flattening of rolled maps, and the installation of custom-built map cases. These improvements will make the collection more accessible to researchers and the public.
