If you walk across campus right now, you will find a profound stillness. The summer months often feel like a deep breath—a quiet pause between the vibrant, kinetic sprints of the academic year. But beneath that quiet surface, in the digital bedrock of this university, there is no pause. There is an engine running hotter and faster than ever before.
For decades, higher education has treated IT as a background utility. The mandate was simple and silent: keep the lights on. IT was the invisible plumbing—the group you only noticed when a system broke, a password expired, or a screen went dark. We were expected to maintain the institution’s gravity.
But George Mason is not an institution that settles for gravity. We are an institution built for momentum. And a university of this magnitude cannot change the world if it is dragging the weight of outdated, fragmented technology. So, we are declaring an end to the era of the IT utility. We are no longer here to just keep the lights on. We are here to light the way.
What you cannot see this summer is the massive architectural shift happening behind the scenes. We are taking a sledgehammer to the digital silos that have historically forced you to bounce from portal to portal. We are weaving a new, seamless fabric across this university anchored by a singular ideal of Digital First, Touch Once - believing that the true currency of a university is not only data but also time.
Every time a student has to re-enter their information, every time a faculty member has to navigate a labyrinth to secure a research grant, and every time our staff is bogged down in manual processing, we are stealing that currency. Through the initiatives we are forging right now—like the university-wide foundational framework of PatriotAI—we are giving that time back. We are hunting down digital friction so that it completely disappears from your daily life.
When we remove the friction of the process, we clear the runway for your potential. We want our faculty focused entirely on the kind of research that redefines human understanding. We want our staff empowered to build a world-class operational backbone. And we want our students to have the frictionless, boundless space they need to chase their highest possible aspirations.
Technology at George Mason is no longer just a tool; it is the canvas upon which this community will paint its future. We are incredibly proud to be the architects of that canvas, and we cannot wait to unveil these new capabilities.
Enjoy the quiet of the summer. In the fall, we take flight. Let’s imagine there are no boundaries.
Go Patriots!

Don't Take the Bait: ITS Launches New Phishing Simulation
|
ITS is using a phishing simulation program to evaluate how the George Mason community recognizes and responds to phishing emails. Results from the simulation will allow ITS to determine George Mason’s response baseline.

| Using AI Responsibly at George Mason
|
AI can help us work smarter, but its use must be guided by sound governance, risk management, privacy protection, and applicable university requirements. Specifically at George Mason, all AI tools follow NIST principles, are reviewed and approved appropriately, and comply with state policies.

Microsoft Azure Migrations: ITS is modernizing its enterprise systems this summer by transitioning our on‑campus data center infrastructure to Microsoft Azure, a cloud-based platform. This initiative provides a more reliable and flexible environment that enhances system stability and supports long-term operational efficiency. To track the server migrations, see the Azure Migrations Dashboard (accessible via the George Mason faculty and staff network). This is a live dashboard that will be updated in real-time to reflect the most current maintenance status. Users are welcome to monitor the dashboard for updates.

Pinnacle Retirement: After more than 20 years with our current billing system, Pinnacle, ITS is moving to PCR360, a platform widely used by higher ed institutions that will support key functions of our telecom services, billing, and inventory. This change will help ITS deliver better service, improve accuracy, and streamline processes. The transition is expected to be complete by December 2026, with training and resources provided to all telecom coordinators over the coming months. For related questions, please contact teladmin@gmu.edu.

TeamDynamix Update: ITS has designated TeamDynamix (TDX) as the official system of record for all ITS work, including incidents, service requests, projects, operational activities, service improvements, and change management. This standardized approach will improve visibility, accountability, reporting, resource planning, and service delivery across the organization. In addition, ITS is enhancing its tiered support model to provide faster and more effective assistance. When questions cannot be resolved through an initial phone call or chat, they will be escalated to an expanded Tier 2 support team that includes ITS staff who specialize in the university’s most critical applications. This realignment will help reduce response times, improve access to technical expertise, and allow other ITS teams to focus on strategic projects and new initiatives that benefit the university community. ITS will continue to grow and revise within TDX and our internal processes and procedures to fully leverage it's capabilities.

| Coming Soon: Azure AI Foundry
|
ITS is working swiftly to enable Azure AI Foundry, George Mason’s secure, governed AI platform that gives researchers, faculty, and staff access to thousands of AI models and tools for building, testing, and deploying AI solutions while maintaining compliance and cost transparency. The new university-managed AI platform is scheduled to launch in late August 2026.
