Thursday, May 8: A critical vote on the Senate stablecoin bill failed.

With a final count of 48-49, the bill did not garner the 60 votes needed to advance. All Democrats present opposed the procedural vote, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) and Angela Alsobrooks (MD) who are co-sponsors of the bill.
Republican Senators Josh Hawley (MO) and Rand Paul (KY) also casted "no" votes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune voted "no" as a way to bring the bill back to the floor at a later date.

Dems Push Back With New Crypto Bills |
U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (MI) joined Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) have introduced the End Crypto Corruption Act, a bill aimed at preventing elected officials and senior government officials from profiting off cryptocurrency assets, including meme coins and stablecoins. It is co-sponsored by 20 Senators, including U.S. Senators Mazie K. Hirono (HI), Chris Van Hollen (MD), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY), Jack Reed (RI), Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), Bernie Sanders (VT), Andy Kim (NJ), Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Cory Booker (NJ), Edward J. Markey (MA), Tammy Duckworth (IL), Elizabeth Warren (MA) and Mark Kelly (AZ).
Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15) plans to introduce the Stop Presidential Profiteering from Digital Assets Act, block President Donald Trump, future presidents, and members of Congress from "profiteering" on memecoins and stablecoins.
U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (CT.) has already introduced the Modern Emoluments and Malfeasance Enforcement (MEME) Act, legislation to prevent corrupt federal officials from using their position to profit off digital assets such as meme coins. Congressman Sam Liccardo (CA-16) introduced companion legislation in the U.S. House.

House Committee on Financial Services Chairman French Hill (AR-02), House Committee on Agriculture Chairman G.T. Thompson (PA-15), House Committee on Financial Services Subcommittee on Digital Assets, Financial Technology, and Artificial Intelligence Chair Bryan Steil (WI-01), and House Committee on Agriculture Subcommittee on Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development Chair Dusty Johnson (SD-AL), last week released a discussion draft of a bill to establish a regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States.
