MASTERPLAN NOW COMPLETE
The Victorian Government is pleased to announce the public release of the Shrine to Sea Masterplan, which will create a new boulevard for Melbourne connecting Domain Gardens to Port Phillip Bay along Albert and Kerferd roads. Once complete, the area will be transformed with improvements to create useable open space with a green boulevard, safer and clearer links and connections for walking and cycling, and the opportunity to learn more about the local history.
The boulevard, which will run along Albert and Kerferd Roads in Albert Park and South Melbourne, will celebrate Traditional Custodians’ connection to Country, naming it Yannawatpanhanna meaning “go to water” in the Boon Wurrung language of the Bunurong people. Some 350 new trees, with 150 already planted, and more than 9000m2 of woody meadows will bring colour and increase biodiversity links in the local area.
The Victorian Government has invested $13 million to support the planning and delivery of the Shrine to Sea project. Preparation of the masterplan involved a comprehensive planning process and extensive community engagement including a community panel and input from a variety of stakeholders. The Victorian Government would like to acknowledge all community members that provided feedback through the various community engagement activities.
The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action will continue to work in partnership with the City of Port Phillip, Parks Victoria and the Department of Transport and Planning to now support their delivery of key projects such as woody meadows along the northern boundary of Albert Park and the Kerferd Road median, improvements to Kings Way and Moray Street intersection and an upgrade to the Kerferd Road Pier forecourt. Partners will also work with Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and key stakeholders to design and deliver the Yannawatpanhanna interpretation trail celebrating local stories.
The Masterplan and project updates can also be found on the Shrine to Sea webpage.
