Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Tonight's updates:
| |
| RPS200 First Day of School – This morning, we celebrated the return of students to Fairfield Court ES and Cardinal ES! These "RPS200" schools have 200 instructional days, or 20 more than a typical school year, to help students catch up after the pandemic. If the pilot goes well and we see significant gains in student achievement, we'll hopefully expand to other schools next year.
Enormous gratitude to everyone who came out to welcome our students back on their first day, including School Board Vice Chair Burke and Board Member Young, Mayor Stoney, City Council President Jones, State Senator Hashmi, State Superintendent Coons, members of the Richmond Police and Fire Departments, and dozens of community members. Finally, please join me in sending a very special shout-out to Principal Wright from Fairfield and Principal Abrego Meneses from Cardinal, along with their teachers and support staff. They truly exemplify what it means to Teach, Lead, and Serve with Love!

| Summer Fest – Don't forget to join us this Saturday, July 29, from 11 am - 3 pm at Richmond High School for the Arts for our 4th Annual Summer Fest back-to-school event. If you need transportation, see the flyer below for pick-up locations and times. Hope you can make it!
| |
| School Application & Selection Town Halls – Join us on Thursday, July 27, from 6 - 7 pm at A.V. Norrell ES (2120 Fendall Ave) for a town hall to share feedback on potential changes to our specialty school and open enrollment processes for the 2023-24 year. For information on additional town halls, please visit our website.
| |
| Community Walks – Have you seen the RPS team out and about in the community sharing back-to-school and enrollment information? We're doing "community walks" all summer long to help families get all the information they need for a successful start to the year. Make sure to check the schedule for upcoming walks so you know when we'll be in your neighborhood!
| |
| Immunization & Physical Clinics – To start school on time, students must have all required immunizations and physicals. To help, the Richmond City Health District has several clinics scheduled just for students. Don't delay – sign up today!

- I'd like to give a special shout-out to Ms. Nicole Fleming for her outstanding dedication in ensuring the smooth operation of our schools. Her remarkable efforts in maintaining efficiency and organization are truly commendable. Ms. Fleming displays qualities of kindness, consideration, professionalism, and courtesy, setting a shining example of what an exemplary team member should be like.
- As a recent graduate, I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am for the Secondary Success Center and staff, especially Mrs. Rebecca Fox. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have graduated this year. She’s amazing at what she does and you can tell she truly cares.
- I'd like to shout-out the amazing summer school teachers and the overall program at Lucille Brown Middle School. The summer team, including interns Camille Hopkins Scott and Shan Rennalls, demonstrated their acumen in amazing ways. They brought energy, competence, light, and laughter to our summer program! SILs Ms. Mcleod, Mr. Hicks, and Ms. Wyche were amenable in every way, truly demonstrating their flexibility. The central office staff overall, and Sidney Gunter, Alvina Jones, Jennifer Johnston, Cierra Scott, and Pamela Randolph, specifically, were spectacular, present, and positive. Our feeder administrators were there to lend a hand, with a special thank you to Ms. Blue, Ms. Jamison, and Ms. Estrada. Our office/counseling staff, Felicia Harris, Michelle Spence, and Mechelle Mayo, were huge supporters with our opening procedures! Big thanks to our custodial team of Mr. Redd, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Booker, as well as our nutrition team, led by Ms. Anderson, for making sure that our services were smoothly delivered and done with a smile. Our care and safety team, represented by CSAs Lomax, Flowers, and Mejia, provided for a safe and secure site. Colossal kudos to our math team, led by Ms. Murray and Ms. Nelson. They supported eighth graders with Algebra I intervention and SOL testing. Students performed well, with significant pass rates and growth! Pride was in the air!! Finally, to all of the amazing southside summer school teachers and students, from River City, Boushall, and LMBMS...thank you for just being stellar in every way! This was a truly dynamic summer program!
