5,700-plus Mavericks set to graduate tomorrow

More than 5,700 students are expected to graduate during UTA’s spring 2024 commencement tomorrow, Friday, May 10, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. UTA’s overall degree count has increased by 4.3% from a year ago, including a 6% increase in bachelor’s degrees and a 7% increase in doctoral degrees. President Jennifer Cowley highlighted student success and community engagement during the annual State of Higher Education luncheon at College Park Center. “I look forward to our continued partnerships and new connections as we create that shared bridge to the future as we work to achieve our aspirations for UTA 2030,” Dr. Cowley said.

| Grad's career plans combine law and mental health
|
Izabella Russell will join a network of 270,000-plus Maverick alums tomorrow at commencement. Her next stop is Baylor Law School, where she will continue to prepare for her dream job of running a NeuroLaw clinic. Russell, whose father is a sergeant in the Fort Worth Police Department, said her parents influenced her interest in law.

| MavWire moves to Thursday distribution
|
May 13 through August 15, MavWire, UTA's internal newsletter to employees, will be distributed weekly on Thursday. To submit an item, email mavwire@exchange.uta.edu. The Office of Marketing, Messaging, and Engagement may send additional MavWires this summer as needed.

UTA’s north and south pedestrian bridges have been revitalized and now display a stampede of Mavericks and UTA branding that can be seen by motorists passing the University on Cooper Street. The $2.5 million renovation project is a part of the UTA 2030 strategic plan to redefine the University’s community impact. Read more about the project in an article by The Fort Worth Report.

| Employee Roundhouse Scholarship

Apply for the UTA Employee Roundhouse Scholarship, which provides $2,000 of tuition assistance for benefits-eligible employees and their dependents. The application deadline is Friday, May 31. Scholarship recipients will be notified by the end of July. Click here to read the eligibility criteria.

| InSTEM coaching opportunity
|
The Office of Undergraduate Research is hiring a coach for scholars in the inSTEM mentorship program. The inSTEM coach leads a cohort of 15 to 30 undergraduate STEM students at UTA and works with the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation to develop and deliver holistic support to the scholars in the program. This role is in addition to an employee’s regular work duties, and there is a stipend for this role. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 13. Contact Kayunta Johnson-Winters for more information.

Donate digital eclipse materials

UTA Libraries Special Collections is seeking community donations of digital materials documenting the solar eclipse that occurred on April 8. Community members are invited to make donations through the Total Solar Eclipse Collection donation form. Items of interest include digital photographs, videos, artwork, and more relating to the eclipse, celebrations, and gatherings in North Texas.

The Center for Research on Teaching and Learning Excellence and the Office of Sustainability are sponsoring a two-day boot camp for faculty to learn about how to integrate sustainability into their courses through the Maverick Advantage. Faculty will receive $500 for completing the boot camp. The sessions will be held in Room 105 of Trinity Hall on Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day with lunch provided. Recycle your eclipse glasses

You can turn in undamaged eclipse glasses for recycling or reuse at the information desks at the University Center and The Commons. The University will send the glasses to nonprofit groups for future distribution and use.

The Department of Information Resources (DIR) will consider one-time exemptions from using DIR's cooperative contracts for purchases up to $50,000. Consider items that your department could be awarded during the Spot Bid Fair.
