Although the Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence works primarily with instructors on course-based pedagogy, we recognize that for many instructors on campus, mentoring is an important aspect of your teaching. This week, we want to highlight resources to support you in your mentoring of students and postdocs.
The Graduate School has a list of resources that covers topics from graduate degree requirements to grants to professional development. There is also a list of Resources for Research Mentors posted by the College of Health that has information applicable to faculty across campus.
Graduate students are mentors too! The Office of Undergraduate Research has posted a list of Faculty and Research Mentor Resources, and they have funding opportunities for undergraduate researchers throughout the year.
Did you know you can get a Research Mentoring Certificate from the Office of Research Education? You can participate in the certificate program either as part of a cohort, or you can take individual courses. This series is open to instructors, graduate students, and postdocs.
The Kahlert Scholars Program is Seeking Mentors! Are you a faculty member who is interested in conducting research and looking for student mentees? You can also learn more about mentoring activities and resources on campus at the University of Utah Enhancing Research Mentoring Symposium on March 12, 2024, from 9-3:30 in the Alumni House. Symposium sessions will include research mentoring skills development classes for mentors and mentees, presentations that highlight exciting mentoring developments on our campus, mentoring resources and opportunities, and a Research Mentoring Showcase. If you’re looking for other mentoring training opportunities, check out the site for the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research. Several of our faculty and staff across campus have attended the trainings offered through CIMER, and this work is integrated into both undergraduate courses and research programs as well as graduate programs.
And finally, the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education is hosting a 5-part series on Raising a Resilient Scientist. The virtual sessions will run once monthly from February through June.
