Costa Rica was explored by the Spanish in the early 16th century but proved difficult to colonize until around 1563 due to disease from mosquito-infested swamps, extreme heat, and unwelcoming indigenous populations. The settlement of Cartago was the first successful colony, located in the cooler, fertile, central highlands. It remained a loyal colony for over two centuries, but in 1821, along with other Central American provinces, it declared its independence from Spain. In 1838, Costa Rica proclaimed its sovereignty and independence from all other powers or associations. Since the late 19th century, it has enjoyed democratic and economic development, marred by only two brief periods of violence. In the 1970s and 1980s, it experienced several waves of refugees from Central American civil wars but has otherwise been able to sustain peace and general prosperity. The country is noted for its commitment to biodiversity and natural land and marine life conservation and is a popular tourist destination. The Church of the Nazarene established work in Costa Rica in 1964.

Los Angeles Strategic Holistic Community Project
There is significant progress on the Los Angeles Strategic Holistic Community project, which aims to establish a church and gathering place in a community in great need in San José, Costa Rica.
Thanks to generous contributions and the help of Alabaster funds, the project has successfully purchased land that is now officially registered in the church's name, and construction is underway for a new building. This development marks a significant step forward for the local community.
In addition to the new church facility, soccer fields have been developed on the property. These fields are already being utilized for a vibrant weekly outreach program called the Escuela de Futbol y Valores (School of Soccer and Values). This initiative has quickly become popular in the neighborhood, attracting children and their families and fostering connections between the community and the church's ministry.

The church also plans to launch English classes with around 50 community members already enrolled. Once the new sanctuary is completed, the existing space can be repurposed as classrooms, allowing for even more outreach programs to benefit the community.
The successful progress of the Los Angeles Strategic Holistic Community project exemplifies how combined efforts can bring about meaningful change. When faith and community come together, and the love and grace of God are present in worship, fellowship, learning, and sports, lives are radically changed.
