Setting our sights on the new academic year |
As we approach the start of the new academic year beginning April 27, 2026, we want to take a moment to welcome both our new and returning preceptors. Your commitment to teaching is the backbone of our Family Medicine Clerkship, and we are grateful for the time, expertise and mentorship you provide our students.
As we continue to refine our program in response to evolving learning requirements, student feedback and the realities of current clinical practice, I would like to take this opportunity to summarize the structure and logistics of our Family Medicine Clerkship for the upcoming academic year.
The Family Medicine Clerkship remains a 6‑week rotation designed to provide students with broad exposure to primary care across diverse clinical settings.
Key components include:
- Training Sites: Students are placed at both local and rural sites and have outpatient and possibly some inpatient experience based on preceptor practices.
- Individualized Schedules: Each student’s schedule is tailored to their assigned site and typically includes:
- Inpatient care blocks
- Half-day specialty in headache clinic (optional), urgent care (optional) and community service (mandatory).
- Didactic Curriculum: Wednesday afternoons are reserved for didactics, allowing all students to engage in structured teaching regardless of clinical site (mandatory).
-
Direct Observation Forms: Each student is assigned to complete the Direct Observation Form Focused History and the Direct Observation Form Physical Exam. Please complete these in real time and return to the medical student with detailed feedback.

Learning goals and objectives
- At baseline, a medical student who does a basic history, appropriate physical exam and comes up with a couple differentials should be able to earn “meets expectation” or “level 3” in most categories.
- Review the grading rubric carefully.
- Provide comments for the learners on their evaluation forms.
-
Provide examples or email Dr. Munshi at aarohim@uic.edu for concerning or exceptional behaviors.

Have a great year ahead.

Plan to attend faculty development trainings |
Residents as educators
Two in-person training sessions per academic year review topics such as giving and receiving feedback, strategies for working with medical students, setting expectations, and learners in difficulty.
If your training program or practice is interested in attending these, please email Linda Burkart at lburkart@uic.edu and a Zoom link will be provided. Scheduling usually takes place in April and late July, but this can vary depending on the schedule.
UICOMR offers a wide range of faculty development CME opportunities. Please visit the Department of Family and Community Medicine Faculty Development webpage for more information.
