MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 2024

Dear Maverick Community,

What an incredible summer this has been! I am excited to welcome you back for the fall 2024 semester, as we prepare our students to begin or continue their journey at UT Arlington. Our commitment to UTA 2030 and the shared dreams outlined in our strategic plan remains our focus, and I see that in the work you are doing every day in support of our students.

This past year, we have welcomed a number of new leaders who are excited to help us reach our dreams. They’re ready for the first day of class, just like our students.

Deidra Turner poses for the first day of school
Kirk Foster poses for the first day of school
Ann Hawkins poses for the first day of school
Jennifer Stephenson poses for the first day of school
Kara Hadley-Shakya poses for the first day of school
Ryan Boyd poses for the first day of school

Student Success

As the semester kicks off, I want to share some of our progress around our goals for Student Success. The Division of Student Success and Division of Student Affairs have been collaborating as members of the First Scholars Network to foster holistic student success among first-generation students, with an emphasis on academic and cocurricular outcomes and the overall student experience. This effort builds upon our already successful work, including our First-Gen Maventure Camp that began this summer.

The Division of Student Affairs is spearheading UTA’s participation in the Texas Higher Education Collaborative for Wellbeing. This effort will use a collective impact framework for higher education institutions to better address student wellbeing on a systemic level. We’ll establish a cross-divisional committee that will use assessment to prioritize students’ wellbeing needs and track our progress.

This semester, we launched our Student Experience Project as a partnership between our Division of Faculty Success, Division of Student Success, and our colleges. Faculty will engage in a range of efforts, including redesigning class syllabi to be more welcoming. Throughout the semester, they’ll receive real-time feedback from students, helping us learn what’s working to better foster a welcoming culture in the classroom.

We also continue to offer new degree programs, and beginning this fall will launch our Bachelor of Business Administration in entrepreneurship and our graduate certificate in Mexican American studies.

UTA West

Earlier this month, we shared transformational news for the western part of the DFW region. We plan to purchase land to establish a new campus, UTA West, located just 14 miles west of downtown Fort Worth in Parker County, one of the fastest-growing counties in the country. This is a true collaboration across departments, from student success to economic development, and directly ties into our UTA 2030 goals focused on Alumni and Community Engagement, Student Success, and Finance and Infrastructure. I look forward to sharing updates as we make continued progress on this effort.

All this great work merely scratches the surface of the exciting new initiatives and programs we are working on to support our students. I encourage you all to think about how you impact our students and to collaborate across departments to continue to make a difference in their success. Let’s make this an impactful semester. Go Mavs!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Cowley signature
