HIGHER ED INSTITUTIONS WRITE LETTER SEEKING ADDITIONAL EXTENSION FOR FVT/GE REPORTING

More than 50 higher education associations, led by the American Council on Education (ACE) joined together to send a letter to Acting Secretary of Education Denise Carter asking that the Department of Education once again delay the reporting requirements for the financial value transparency (FVT) and gainful employment (GE) rule beyond the newly-established Feb. 18 deadline. The deadline has been delayed twice already. The associations asked for the extension in light of the “change in the administration and the challenges institutions faced in reporting their data by Jan. 15.” The letter asked ED to extend the deadline to at least July 2025 and to also include an opportunity to correct the completers list.

ED DEPARTMENT LAUNCHES TITLE IX PROBE

The U.S. Department of Education launched Title IX investigations into San José State University, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association regarding transgender female athletes participating on teams matching their gender identity. The agency's Office for Civil Rights is also reviewing policies at other schools.

These investigations follow an executive order signed by President Donald Trump this week, which prohibits transgender female athletes from participating in women’s sports and threatens to withhold federal funding from non-compliant institutions.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CABINET UPDATES

Cabinet confirmations are ongoing for the second Trump administration. Since our digest Tuesday, the Senate has confirmed three nominations:

Pam Bondi, Attorney General
Russell Vought, Director for the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)
Scott Turner, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

A hearing was just announced for the nomination of Linda McMahon for Education Secretary, set for Feb. 13.
