NJCU will host its third edition of its newly-launched Presidential Fireside Chat Series on Monday, February 3, 2025 from 2-4 p.m. in the Gothic Lounge, featuring the Honorable Jose L. Linares '75 ('18 Honorary).

The Honorable Jose L. Linares became Chief Judge of the New Jersey Federal District Court on June 1, 2017. He is the first Hispanic in the history of the New Jersey Federal Court to serve as Chief District Court Judge, and the first Cuban-born to serve as Federal District Court Chief in the United States.

Linares was nominated to the bench by President George W. Bush in 2002, and served from 2002 to 2019 on the U.S. District Court, before retiring from service.

The 1975 NJCU (then Jersey City State College) alumnus was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference offensive lineman for the Gothic Knight football team. At the university's 2018 Commencement ceremony, he received an honorary doctor of humane letters and addressed that year's graduating class.

Today, Linares is a partner at the law firm of McCarter & English, LLP, where he chairs McCarter’s Alternative Dispute Resolution practice.

Throughout the month of February, visit the Congressman Frank J. Guarini Library to view our Black History Month book display on the first floor of the library. Students, faculty, and staff can use their Gothic ID cards to check out the print books from the Library, and access the eBooks for free from their computers, phones, or tablets. The NJCU Lemmerman Gallery is pleased to present "Pat Lay: Hybrid", to showcase highlights of the prolific multimedia artist, Pat Lay, who is based in Jersey City. Over two decades Lay’s artwork has explored technological metaphors of human experience. Her sculptures, made of fired clay, computer parts and other readymade elements, are hybrid forms that have cross-cultural references and question what it means to be human.

In Lay’s collages, digital images scanned from computer circuit boards are transformed into a new matrix. Reminiscent of Buddhist mandalas, these abstractions are created in response to our world of technological advancement and digital progress. In her ongoing series, "Soul Bots and Nested Bots", she embeds computer parts such as aluminum heat sinks and cooler fans in organic clay forms, suggesting possible hybrid creatures and plants of the near future. “How are we as humans changed by the new advances in technology?” Lay asks. By working both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally, Lay seeks answers to the question through visual and tactile explorations.

The Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education is pleased to announce the establishment of the Distinguished Alumni Awards. This award will honor the outstanding achievements and contributions of alumni whose work has positively impacted schools and communities.

The deadline to nominate is Friday, March 7, 2025. Award winners will be celebrated at a special recognition event on April 28, 2025, at 5 p.m. in the Gothic Lounge in Hepburn Hall 202 on campus.

Teachers, administrators, and other education or counseling professionals who completed an NJCU College of Education undergraduate or graduate program are eligible for nomination. You may recommend a friend or colleague or submit a nomination for yourself. All nominations should include a nomination statement and appropriate supporting documentation.

Ask. Listen. Refer. is an online suicide prevention training designed to give you the skills to recognize signs of suicide and have a conversation with someone you are concerned about. As we continue to dedicate ourselves to increasing mental health awareness, and suicide prevention efforts, this training is essential for all of our offices. It will take about 15-20 minutes and has very valuable information.

Ask. Listen. Refer. provides a certificate of completion, and also includes a pre and post-test. If you need proof of completion, please connect with me, as I will be able to track its participants. This interactive online suicide prevention program has been shown to increase the ability of students to recognize and respond to peers at risk for suicide.

This is an excellent, convenient program that is a great resource for our division and the campus.

The NJCU Visual Arts Gallery is pleased to hold an exhibition of the Jersey-City-based sculptor, Jerome China. "Found and Reclaimed" is an exploration of rediscovery, transformation, and the reclamation of what was once thought to be lost, forgotten, or overlooked. In this exhibition, the artist investigates the idea that what is "found" is often more than just a physical object or a moment in time; it is the reawakening of something deep within us, something that holds meaning, power, or beauty that was hidden in plain sight or lost to time. This work challenges the notion of permanence, suggesting that everything has the potential for reclamation, whether it’s a forgotten memory, a discarded object, or a part of our own identity.  

The works featured in "Found and Reclaimed" utilize metal sculpture to tell stories of rediscovery. These pieces examine how the act of reclaiming something—whether a personal narrative, a physical object, or an abstract concept—can give it new life, purpose, and significance. The artist presents "found" objects and ideas that were once discarded, reimagined, or altered, breathing new life into them and reflecting on the potential inherent in reinterpreting what has been overlooked.

Jerome China was born in 1961 in Richmond, Virginia. He received his early training as the first artist in residence at All Iron Works commercial welding and fabrication shop currently located in Hoboken, N.J. In addition, he studied with blacksmith Paul Januz at Gravity Line Forge. These residence experiences provided a balanced foundation in welding, blacksmithing, and metallurgy. He has lived in New York and Virginia and currently resides in Jersey City.

Hair We Are Again is hosting a signature event aimed at E.R.A.S.E. — Education, Resources, Affirmation, Support, and Empowerment — for all curly and coily hair textures. NJCU is partnering with All About Us Festival to bring a meaningful initiative to campus: the McCourty Twins Tackle Sickle Cell Blood Drive to support individuals affected by sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease disproportionately impacts our Black community and Black patients often face challenges in finding compatible blood donors. Blood donations from people of similar ethnic backgrounds are critical for managing this condition through transfusions.

NJCU and its TRiO Learning Community (TLC) Program will host the inaugural TRiO SSS Student Leadership Conference. Also attending will be TRiO students from Rowan College of South Jersey Cumberland, Passaic County Community College, Saint Peter's University and Seton Hall University.

TRiO/TLC is a federal student Support Services Program at NJCU, funded by the United States Department of Education and the university. This program is designed to provide support services to low-income, first-generation students and/or students with disabilities. The TRiO Learning Community (TLC) Program at NJCU is known nationally as a federal Student Support Services (SSS) program.

Please note, this event is only for members of the TLC program.
