Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer (TREC) Training Workshop

The TREC workshop is designed for postdocs and junior faculty to develop grant applications related to obesity, metabolism, diet, exercise, and cancer from a translational and transdisciplinary perspective. Basic scientists, clinician-scientists and population scientists are encouraged to apply.
The 5-day in-residence workshop features networking and collaborative opportunities with faculty who span an array of professional disciplines. Formal didactic learning is integrated with one-on-one dialog and small group discussions to enable participants to not only learn from each other and faculty, but also develop a network of collaborators. Rana R. McKay, MD, FASCO is the Associate Director of Clinical Science at Moores Cancer Center. She is a board-certified medical oncologist who specializes in treating people with urogenital cancers, including bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancer. As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. McKay instructs medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She serves as principal investigator of several early phase trials in kidney and prostrate cancer. As a clinical investigator, she is committed to advancements in cancer care that will improve the lives of cancer patients.

COE attended this annual event on Saturday, November 23, 2024 to distribute cancer prevention resources and promote men’s health awareness month. Moores Member David Strong, PhD assisted in highlighting lung cancer awareness month.

SAY SD “What I Wish My Parents Knew”

The week of December 2, 2024, COE Liaisons Alexia Barrientos and Krzel Manansala-Tan attended this event that encouraged parents and youth to discuss “tough to talk about” topics. Alexia and Krzel provided resources on not only HPV vaccination as a means of cancer prevention, but also smoking cessation and the risks of tobacco.

Cancer Prevention at Jackie Robinson YMCA

Last week, COE attended the final monthly health fair at the Jackie Robinson YMCA for 2024, providing over 70 members of the community with cancer prevention resources and information. The monthly health fairs for 2025 will begin in February.
