Commencement in-person and virtual ceremonies
|
UTA will celebrate the accomplishments of its newest Maverick alumni with ceremonies Friday, Dec. 15, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The ceremony time will be approximately two to two and a half hours. The scheduled start times for each college along with links to virtual ceremonies are below.
9 a.m. - The colleges of Business and Liberal Arts and the School of Social Work
2 p.m. - The colleges of Education, Engineering, Science, and Honors
7 p.m. - College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs; College of Nursing and Health Innovation; and the Division of Student Success

Graduates should plan to arrive at Globe Life Field 75 minutes before their ceremony begins. The doors will open 60 minutes before each ceremony for guests. Other common Commencement-related inquiries can be found on the Commencement frequently asked questions page.

MavGrad Celebration, a fun and family-friendly event, is planned for Thursday, Dec. 14, 6-9 p.m. in the Bluebonnet Ballroom of the University Center. UTA’s graduating students will celebrate with their peers, friends, and family. This free event will feature food, drinks, a drone show, live music, photo opportunities, and festive activities.

| Globe Life Field bag policy
|
With a goal to enhance public safety and the guest experience at Globe Life Field, a clear bag policy is in full effect for all events at Globe Life Field. For Commencement guests, all bags and purses must be soft sided and not exceed 16 inches long by 16 inches wide by 8 inches tall. Backpacks are prohibited, except for single-compartment drawstring bags that do not exceed 16 inches long by 16 inches wide by 8 inches tall. All bags are subject to search before entering the ballpark. Strollers are permitted.

Maverick Pantry offers cap and gown rentals to students who demonstrate financial need and cannot afford their cap and gown. Email eaf@uta.edu for more information. Maverick Pantry also houses the Professional Development Closet, which is accessible to all students who are in need of professional attire for career and internship interviews. Item availability can include pant suits, belts, ties, socks, blouses, blazers, shoes, and much more.

| APD to hold training in UTA parking lot Friday
|
The Arlington Police Department’s training academy will be conducting practice safety traffic stops in UTA Parking Lot 50 on Friday, Dec. 15, 12-9 p.m. Selected parts of the parking lot will be closed off starting on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 14. Trainees will use laser training pistols called shot indicating resetting trigger (SIRT) pistols for their traffic stop training. They will not be utilizing any additional use of force other than their SIRT pistols and handcuffs.

Building connections with world experts in supercomputing
|
Fatima Bagheri, a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at UTA, was one of 75 students selected to attend an intensive program on supercomputing at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. The workshop expanded her knowledge of high-performing computer techniques that are relevant to her research goals.

UTA PD wins its 12th consecutive National Night Out Award
|
The UTA Police Department has now been recognized by the National Association of Town Watch with the National Night Out Award for 12 years in a row. UTA Police was one of six university police departments to earn the designation in 2023, with four UT System institutions represented.
Senior Public Safety Officer Jackie Carter played a pivotal role in leading the committee, and each member elevated the standard of commitment to a commendable level. The UTA Police Department’s achievement necessitated the dedicated efforts of a substantial portion of its department, truly exemplifying a collaborative team effort. The department also expresses its sincere appreciation to the community volunteers, vendors, and donors whose invaluable contributions made another successful year possible.

Alumna recognized for her dedication to helping students
|
Sandra Esquivel, associate director of regional operations, partnerships, and community outreach at UTA, helps high school seniors navigate the application process and mentors Maverick students who need guidance through college life. Esquivel’s work earned her recognition as a 2023 recipient of the Mujeres Legendarias Award presented by the Ford Motor Company.

| Competition for STEM graduate students
|
Graduate students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are encouraged to participate in a 10-week virtual training program that culminates in a policy-pitch competition. The top three winners of the Science Policy Advocacy For Research Competition will travel to Washington, D.C., for three days of in-person advocacy training and opportunities to make face-to-face pitches to policy makers on Capitol Hill. Apply for the program by Friday, Dec. 15.

| Spirit of Innovation competition
|
Undergraduate and graduate students in North Texas are invited to apply for a spot in a technology and business plan competition by Sunday, Jan. 7. The Spirit of Innovation competition was created for students who want to create a technology solution for a real problem. The winners will receive cash prizes. Read the competition rules and apply to compete.
