Teacher Professional Development Programs


Throughout the year, the Tennessee State Museum offers professional development opportunities for teachers. Registration is now open for two offerings: Tennessee Civics - At the Tennessee State Capitol and the Summer Teacher Professional Development Series: Tennessee v. Scopes: 100 years of the "trial of the century". Workshops are hosted at the Tennessee State Museum and partner locations across the state.
Join us on May 29 and 30 for a free, two-day Tennessee Civics Education Workshop at the Tennessee State Capitol. Educators will see and experience the three branches of state government while using the historic state capitol building and State Museum as their headquarters.

Virtual Field Trips and Traveling Trunks

Our Virtual Field Trips and Traveling Trunks are popular program offerings developed to grab their attention in fun, inspiring ways using hands-on materials, artifacts, and a look inside the museum. Each month we’ll provide program options designed to align with topics you are teaching in the classroom!

Virtual Field Trips
Tennessee History Course 2025 (for students and teachers)
Each Monday in May, our education staff will be broadcasting live from the Tennessee State Museum’s galleries as we explore the exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of Tennessee. This course is designed around the official state history course standards and will take them one by one as we move through the Museum. Each program lasts 30 minutes with 15 minutes for Q and A afterwards. Request this program here.
Traveling Trunks
The Three Rs of Reconstruction: Rights, Restrictions, and Resistance and Understanding
This trunk discusses the Reconstruction era in Tennessee with a focus on the issues facing African Americans during this time. Your students will explore the rights that were given to them, the restrictions that were placed on these rights and the resistance that followed these changes to society. Designed for an 8th grade audience, this trunk provides students with primary source material and hands-on activities. Request this trunk here.
Understanding Women’s Suffrage: Tennessee’s Perfect 36
The story of how Tennessee became the Perfect 36 are retold through the lessons and materials in this trunk. Using primary sources, students will analyze both sides of the fight. They will take on the persona of pro and anti-forces that were represented in Nashville during that long hot summer in 1920. They will role play the debates and create banners, posters, buttons, and wear roses that signify their political affiliation on the issue.  Request this trunk here.

Nashville Opera ON TOUR: Goldie B. Locks & the Three Singing Bears


The Nashville Opera is on tour with a free performance for children and Museum guests. Join us on Saturday, March 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the Grand Hall for a presentation of "Goldie B. Locks & the Three Singing Bears." Introduce your children to opera with John Davies’ fun operatic retelling of the classic children’s fairy tale! The adventure teaches children the true meaning of friendship and the importance of honesty. No reservations are required.

ARTIFACT HIGHLIGHT

Tennessee Centennial Exposition Commemorative Coin 


This coin was minted as a souvenir for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. It depicts a bust of Andrew Jackson as well as the Tennessee state seal. Souvenir coins, like this, were common at the time and continue to be used for special events today.
