Sacramento State students are cataloging and studying more than 600 pieces of African art in a project that bridges past and present. The Sankofa Research Team, guided by faculty experts, is documenting cultural artifacts that will become accessible through campus exhibits and outreach to local schools.
"I'm just over-the-moon proud of what these scholars have done," said Ethnic Studies professor Clarence George III. "This is a massive project, and none of it gets done without my students and their passion to share these things with the world."
The collection, donated after a chance encounter at a local grocery store, includes handwoven baskets, drums and other items from southern and central Africa. Students plan to create both physical and digital exhibitions to share this cultural heritage with the broader community.
