Dear Colleagues-Friends:
On Monday, January 20, UT Health Science Center joins the nation in celebrating the impactful work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we pause to celebrate his accomplishments and his legacy, we want to remind you of the following:
In the U.S., 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day). MLK Day was the first federal holiday to honor a national figure who did not serve as President of the United States of America.
Dr. King’s unceasing example of activism on the status of human rights inspires and awes concurrently. More importantly, it implores us to recognize that his work through each of us is not yet done. Did you know that MLK Day remains the only federal holiday established by the U.S. Congress as a National Day of Service? We encourage all of us to reflect on the meaning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in this 30th year and consider ways to get more involved with UT Health Science Center’s respective communities (Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville) as we advance the values Dr. King stood for in our own lives and in the communities we share.
We have identified programs and activities across the state and invite you to observe and engage communities and organizations that will commemorate MLK Day 2025:

However you decide to spend the 30th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, we thank you for your consideration and commitment to our UT Health Science Center vision – Healthy Tennesseans. Thriving Communities.
Appreciatively,
