UTA’s Park(ing) Day, hosted by the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs (CAPPA), encouraged people to convert parking spaces into social spaces to raise awareness for safer and greener streets. Students from several CAPPA student organizations repurposed parking spots across The Commons.

Adaptive Sports Expo

To try out adaptive sports like wheelchair basketball, adaptive sled hockey, wheelchair lacrosse, amputee soccer, wheelchair fencing, and wheelchair dance, several dozen parents took their children to the Eighth Annual Adaptive Sports Expo at the Maverick Activities Center.

Outstanding Assessment Practitioner Awards

Timothy Ponce, assistant professor of instruction in the Department of English, is this year’s winner of the Faculty Outstanding Assessment Practitioner Award, and Taylor Kessner, assistant professor in the Department of Teacher and Administrator Preparation, is the runner-up in the faculty category. This year’s winner of the Staff Outstanding Assessment Practitioner Award is Beth Fleener, senior teaching innovation research associate, and the runner-up in the staff category is Amoon Austin, data analyst.

Home volleyball game

The UTA volleyball team will take on Southern Utah University Thursday, Oct. 3, at College Park Center. The first 150 students to arrive can enjoy free nachos in the Corral (student section) starting at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 5, the volleyball team will have another home game, and there will be a friendship bracelet giveaway for students.

Neutrino discovery

The Neutrino Group at UTA, under the leadership of physics Professors Andrew Brandt and Jaehoon Yu, Associate Professor Jonathan Asaadi, and Assistant Professor Raquel Castillo Fernández, are part of the Short-Baseline Near Detector project that has identified the detector’s neutrino interactions for the first time. The discovery was made after nearly a decade of planning, prototyping, and constructing the detector by an international collaboration of scientists.

Congratulations to UTA Alumni Brian Geck ('09 BFA, Art) and Preston Ward ('06 BBA) from Sky Elements Drones on a terrific run in this season of America's Got Talent. The Sky Elements Drones team finished third in the season finale.

The College of Nursing and Health Innovation’s Center for Rural Health and Nursing (CRHN) will host the third Annual Rural Health Conference Oct. 23-24 on campus.
