Last week, I had the opportunity to introduce an event at the Vanderbilt-New York City campus. It was a dynamic conversation among leading experts about the critical challenges currently facing democracy worldwide, and how democratic resilience can be strengthened. The event was a perfect illustration of what growth means at Vanderbilt—we are not just bringing our academic values to new geographic locations; we are bringing important debates, civil discourse, and free expression, as well. These values are central to the mission of the College of Arts and Science. Our faculty’s groundbreaking research and world-class teaching, and our students’ academic experiences, are strengthened when we engage in vigorous and contested conversations, listen to different perspectives, and remain open to changing our minds. It is those values that undergird our work and enable us to offer an unparalleled academic experience.
