Moores-Affiliated Lab Earns National Recognition for Ovarian Cancer Research

Sofia Howe, a joint doctoral student at UC San Diego and San Diego State University (SDSU), who conducts research in the lab of Moores Member Carrie House, PhD at SDSU, was recognized at the SACNAS NDiSTEM conference for her poster presentation “The Role of Obese Preadipocytes in the Ovarian Cancer Tumor Microenvironment,” which was one of five graduate poster award winners.  Congratulations to Sofia and Dr. House. ANDREW M. LOWY, MD, FACS

Andrew M. Lowy, MD is a surgical oncologist with expertise in treating cancers of the pancreas and GI tract. Dr. Lowy is recognized worldwide for his expertise in pancreatic cancer surgery and in the management of complex gastrointestinal cancers. He is also known for investigating novel cancer treatments, including heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), to treat advanced abdominal cancers.

Cancer Prevention and Screening at the Annual Adelante Promotores Conference

COE Coordinator Maritza Gomez, in partnership with Mateo Banegas, PhD, Co-Director, UC San Diego CHEER, presented a bilingual session that highlighted the essential role of Promotores and community health workers in providing education on cancer prevention and screenings in their communities.

Cancer Screening Guidelines at the VA Great American Smokeout Fair

COE liaisons shared information at the fair on tobacco, programs that help with smoking cessation, and cancer screening guidelines, which was especially helpful for military veterans who attended and may be experiencing cancer.

LGBTQIA Needs Assessment in Hillcrest

COE continues to conduct the LGBTQIA Needs Assessment. COE Liaison Krzel Manansala-Tan has distributed surveys in Hillcrest with VIDA to qualified respondents. Contact COE if you are interested in helping distribute the survey.
