The work of the Church of the Nazarene began officially in the United States in 1887, though the formal organization of the denomination occurred in 1908 with the merger of several like-minded holiness groups. As in many parts of the world, there is an ever-increasing secularization of society, and in the post-COVID world, the United States finds itself fragmenting politically, socially, and economically with many Americans feeling isolated between extremes. There is a renewed emphasis on evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. Whether congregational settings are large or small, people are looking for church communities committed to authenticity, open-hearted fellowship, and a sense of belonging. The message of scriptural holiness is more relevant than ever, and it embraces and challenges all ages. As you will read in the story that follows, prayer is one way in which a local church can passionately engage its community and influence change for good. Prayer is foundational to all that we endeavor to do in missions, whether it be on the local or global scale.

Drive-Through Prayer Makes an Impact in Illinois, USA
The Church of the Nazarene in North Pekin, Illinois, recognizes the crucial role of prayer and has established itself as a praying church with a midweek prayer group and spontaneous prayer during Sunday worship. Recognizing their strength in prayer, they sought to tangibly extend their presence in the community. In June, they started their drive-through prayer event.

They created poster board signs and provided dinner to encourage participation. Through experimenting with different days and times, they found the best moments for hosting the event, resulting in an improved response from passing cars with drivers honking and waving in support. Situated along a prominent road with a convenient circular drive, the church's location proved ideal for this endeavor. Participants could engage with drivers or simply hold signs on the roadside. Everyone offered prayers for those passing by, asking the Lord to draw them in. This event has deeply impacted individuals who have shared their burdens, expressed their need for prayer, and even accepted Christ. Despite weather challenges, drive-through prayer has gained attention from passing cars and neighboring residents.

Their goal is simply to be a praying church, bringing light and hope to the dark world through prayer. As the return of Christ approaches, prayer is the force that pushes back against the darkness and brings hope and light to those who need it. The North Pekin Church of the Nazarene is determined to be that source of light and make prayer a central part of their ministry to the community.
