Stowe Country Club Back-9 Preview

We’re excited to officially wrap up construction of all 18 holes of the course at Stowe Country Club, maintaining the same vision of focus we’ve implemented on the front nine; elevating playability, aesthetics, and challenge.

This past summer, Stowe Country Club completed a major renovation of its back nine holes in collaboration with Beau Welling Design, focusing on enhancing playability, aesthetics, and challenge. The redesign introduced new forward tee boxes for all skill levels, rerouted cart paths for smoother circulation, and enhanced walkability with improved connections from green to tee. All bunkers were redesigned or built with the state-of-the-art Better Billy Bunker system, while a new irrigation and comprehensive drainage system ensures consistent course conditions.

The routing was reimagined to highlight natural features, sightlines, and views, while a new par-3 hole shifted the layout to a par-71 course. Despite the change, the course gained approximately 200 yards in total length, adding fresh challenges for long hitters. Additional improvements include re-grassed fairways and upcoming expanded fescue planting for aesthetic appeal. Construction has also begun on a new comfort station, accessible from holes five and fourteen, strategically positioned midway through golfers' play of the front and back. This comfort station, thoughtfully designed to emulate a Vermont sugar shack, will open in the summer of 2026. As we progress to the end of our 2025 season, we’re now planning the final stages of the grow-in operation, including a comprehensive tree planting plan for screening and improved vistas. The result of this year’s progress is a course true to its original vision: more playable and enjoyable for the everyday golfer, while still offering strategic challenges and compelling green complexes for experienced players.

We’re excited to see this plan unfold as we open next season and watch the continued progress of our investment as the course maturation process continues over the next several years.

Hole #10

Hole 10 – Par 3 | Maximum Distance - 217 Yards

Hole Ten now features a brand-new “punchbowl” green complex with bentgrass flanking both sides and a subtle slope to the left. The redesign opens up more shot-making options from the tee, with the removal of front bunkers and the addition of a strategic greenside bunker to the right. A new back bunker elegantly frames the green, creating a beautiful setting to begin the back nine. Bentgrass now connects the tenth green to the eleventh tee box, resulting in a seamless transition to the next hole for walking players.

Hole #11

Hole 11 – Par 5 | Maximum Distance – 471 Yards

Hole Eleven has been transformed with new fairway bunkers at key landing areas, creating a strategic decision point on the second shot. Significant tree removal on the left side has opened up views and playability, and the fairway has been reimagined to connect with the sixth hole and now sports a collection of three visually striking bunkers between the two holes. The redesigned two-tier green now features two distinct plateaus, with strong fold offs on the front and right. The back third of the green offers exciting new pin positions, replacing the hole’s formerly severe slope with more variety and creativity.

01: Hole 11’s new fairway and green offer a stunning approach from the right side of the fairway.

02: A new look green offers plenty of undulation as well as a savior bunker left.

03: Beau Welling and the SCC team assess sightlines from the new tee box of Hole 11.

Hole #12

Hole 12 – Par 4 | Maximum Distance – 458 Yards

Formerly the seventeenth, Hole Twelve has been completely rerouted and dramatically lengthened by more than 40 yards due to a new back tee box, with new forward tees ensuring accessibility for all players. A commanding bunker guards the left side of the fairway, serving as an excellent aiming point for players while the preserved cross slope funnels well-struck shots back toward the center, a signature feature of the hole. The widened entrance to the contoured green now welcomes a greater variety of approach angles, making the hole more playable while retaining its strategic challenge. Already a favorite on the property, Hole Twelve has become even more rewarding for every golfer.

01: A new view of a familiar favorite updated back tees have added significant distance while aligning the visual nature of Hole 12.

02: An elevated look at the green complex from the new bunker perched high on the left cross slope.

03: Balls struck well off the tee will still funnel towards the center fairway, offering an excellent look at the new green.

Hole #13

Hole 13 – Par 4 | Maximum Distance – 412 Yards

Rerouted from the former sixteenth, Hole Thirteen has been completely transformed with significant earthwork that lowers the initial slope from the tee, presenting golfers a new, clear view of their initial tee shot landing area. The old green site has been reshaped into a new fairway landing zone, while a fairway bunker on the right and a new greenside bunker add strategic line of play strategy. No longer a straightaway, the green has been shifted approximately 50 yards to the right across a stream, creating a fresh look that promises to be a signature hole for the course.

01: Some of the most significant earthwork on full display, as the entire hole is now visible from the tee box – as well as a new comfort station debuting in 2026.

02: The first landing area sets the player up well for their second shot, over a small creek to a green complex that is guarded by a bunker to the right.

03: A stunning afternoon view back towards Camel’s Hump from the green.

Hole #14

Hole 14 – Par 3 | Maximum Distance – 151 yards

A new par three, Hole Fourteen, has been rerouted from the previous twelfth fairway and offers a seamless transition from the thirteenth green, enhanced with expanded bentgrass from tee to green, a unique architectural feature of the course. Playing downhill from a maximum of 150 yards, it presents a clear approach from the forward tees, while a front-left bunker tests those from the back tees. The green’s thumbprint contours create four distinct quadrants for varied pin placements, adding strategy and interest to every round. Distance control will be key to avoid putting or playing through the two swales located left and right within the green. A new comfort station nearby, opening in July 2026, will provide restrooms, ambiance, and food & beverage convenience, making this hole as enjoyable as it is memorable.

02: Beau Welling & the SCC team discuss the shape of the green in June 2025.

03: Work begins on the site of our new Comfort Station, located adjacent to Hole 14 & Hole 5.

Hole #15

Hole 15 – Par 4 | Maximum Distance – 354 Yards

Formerly the thirteenth, Hole Fifteen underwent some of the most significant earthwork of all holes on the back nine, sharply reducing the former right-to-left cross slope so fairway shots now stay on line. All-new tee boxes were built, with elevated forward tees shifted to the right for optimal playability. A fescue-planted berm along the left screens the maintenance area, while two fairway bunkers on the left reward precise placement — staying right provides the best angle to the elevated green. The green, now moved away from Cape Cod Road, which reduces the dog-leg, features a left-side bunker and a “savior” bunker long. The orientation of the green being wide but not offering a lot of depth rewards tee shots down the right center side of the fairway. This updated green complex makes Hole fifteen the most strategic tee shot on the course. Golfers will have to contemplate club selection off the tee, anything from an iron to a driver being a worthwhile choice.

01: Substantial earth moving work has transformed this hole, significantly reducing its fairway’s previous right-to-left cross slope.

02: This new green is perched up on the hillside and offers plenty of interesting approach looks to players.

03: These three bunkers leading to the green complex can prove a challenge for golfers who veer left on approach.

Hole #16

Hole 16 – Par 5 | Maximum Distance – 518 Yards

Heading across Cape Cod Road to the previous fourteenth, the rerouting has unlocked a new and improved finishing three-hole stretch, now resulting in a Par 5, Par 3, Par 4 finish. Hole Sixteen now features an expanded tee box complex, with the new back tees adding 40 yards to challenge long hitters as they aim towards the stream crossing. A new fairway bunker on the left protects a safety for shots heading to the far left, while the former right-side bunker has been removed. A strategically centered fairway bunker in the second landing zone, paired with another 20 yards ahead on the left, frames the hole beautifully and creates a key decision point; lay up or go for the green. The dramatically expanded and elevated green features a sharp drop-off along the left side and a right greenside bunker, paired with a newly defined front and back zones offering a variety of pin placements.

01: Once over the creek, the new-look green complex still demands an accurate approach, while a central fairway bunker adds a new challenge.

02: New back tees add more distance, while a new fairway bunker on the left can offer salvation before the hazard area.

03: A visual of the right greenside bunker and elevated approach.

Hole #17

Hole 17 – Par 3 | Maximum Distance – 238 Yards

Hole Seventeen (formerly fifteen) now connects seamlessly from sixteen’s green with bentgrass linking to the new tees, offering a massive 238-yard tee shot from the back. The expanded tee complex provides a wide range of options for all skill levels and yardage options for multi day events. A subtle ridge on the approach of this “Biarritz” style green allows shots played short to roll naturally to the front, adding strategic nuance and options. As the only hole on the back nine without a bunker, it mirrors the classic simplicity of the fifth hole on the front, with a traditional, beautifully shaped green that rewards precise play.

01: New back tees provide additional length to Hole 17, and a seamless transition from green to tee.

02: The new forward tee complex perfectly frames this bunker-less green complex.

03: An aerial view of the earth work that led to this “Biarritz” style green.

Hole #18

Hole 18 – Par 4 | Maximum Distance 304 Yards

Hole Eighteen features strategically aligned tee boxes aimed down the center line of play, presenting golfers with a key decision: lay up for a full club approach or challenge the hole with a longer tee shot for a pitch into the green. The “Lion’s Mouth” green includes a short center bunker, with flared front-left and front-right fold offs, adding strategic interest from every angle. Elevated and pushed back towards the clubhouse, the green is protected on the back and left by the largest and most dramatic bunkers on the property, making for a memorable finishing hole. This newly designed green complex is the largest on the course, offering a wide variety of pin placements to cap off the round.

01: The “Lion’s Mouth” green offers a majestic visual to conclude a round of golf at Stowe Country Club.

02: A row of maple trees has been planted along the left side, flanking Cape Cod Road.

03: The back greenside bunkers demand accurate approaches to the green from all angles.
