Old rivalry, new energy: Inaugural Causeway Boxing Classic set for fall |
The decades-old rivalry between Sacramento State and UC Davis will get a new twist this year: the inaugural Causeway Boxing Classic, a full card of bouts between amateur boxers from the two universities.
The event will take place Nov. 22, the day before the annual Causeway Classic football game. Athletes will be from Sac State's Combat U program and UC Davis' boxing club.
“If you live in this region, you either graduated from UC Davis or Sacramento State or you know somebody who did, so that’s why it’s one of the biggest football games of the year,” Sac State President Luke Wood said. “Expanding that rivalry to now include a different type of sport is a wonderful opportunity for the students, and it’s one part of a larger effort that we have around Combat U.”
