Dr. Trevonne Thompson Named UI COM Rockford Regional Dean

Trevonne Thompson, MD, MHPE, FACMT, has been named regional dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford (UICOMR), effective March 16, 2026, and pending University of Illinois Board of Trustees approval. Dr. Thompson takes over the role from Alex Stagnaro-Green, MD, MHPE, MHA who is stepping down after 12 years as the Rockford regional dean.

Developing New Treatment Options for Sickle Cell Disease + Chronic Kidney Disease Patients
|
Researchers have been awarded a five-year, $3.78 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study chronic kidney disease in people with sickle cell disease. Chronic kidney disease affects over half of those diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

| The Curious Case Of the Missing Endothelial Cells
|
Kazlauskas and McCann analyzed the blood vessels removed from patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Much to the researchers’ surprise, a few patients’ samples included no endothelial cells at all. Instead, immune cells were the dominant cell type in the surgical specimens.

UICOMP Hosts 'Images of Medicine' Exhibit

On display through Friday, January 30, the Library of the Health Sciences located at UICOMP is displaying “Images of Medicine: Illustration, Photography, Technology” which offers insight into the historic role that images have played in medicine and medical education.

| UICOMR Launches Street Medicine Training Rotation
|
The UICOMR Family Medicine Residency Program recently launched its clinical rotations for the Street Medicine Training Program. The rotation includes inpatient care, street runs in Rockford, and rural communities and care for the unhoused at partner locations.

Asana is a work management platform that helps teams organize projects, track tasks and deadlines, manage timelines, and improve visibility and accountability across work.
Access: Any COM staff member or department may request access. Licenses are centrally managed by the PMO.
Training: New users are automatically enrolled in the Asana Training Academy, which includes short, self-paced recorded trainings.
Support and Community: The PMO will offer best-practice sessions, community gatherings, and targeted department trainings in the coming months. Additional details will be shared in the coming months.

The Team Dynamix (TDX) ticketing system for support requests will be undergoing enhancements in the coming weeks, including a readjustment of service categories and forms. Current TDX admins will be included in the decision making ahead of the rollout.
