DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS

|
Message from Fr. John and TammyWe can’t believe that we are more than halfway through the fall semester. It has been a wonderful journey thus far, from Orientation Weekend to beginning our Month of Remembrance and the annual celebration of Día de los Muertos in which we remember our loved ones. Overall the campus has been buzzing with great programs and activities, much like before COVID-19. It’s been a true joy watching the students be so engaged in campus life. As always, we hope this e-newsletter strengthens our relationship with all in the Division of Student Affairs and the UP Community so we can better serve our students. The Student Affairs professional staff continue to impress us every day. In this month of Thanksgiving, we appreciate all of you and your work with our students to create the holistic UP experience. Remember, we are always a phone call or email away.

Five colleagues from our Student Affairs Division have been accepted into NASPA's Early Career Development Institute (ECDI). NASPA is a professional organization for student affairs administrators in higher education, and the ECDI is a signature initiative to provide new, full-time professionals in their first three (3) years in the field an opportunity to connect with peers and senior staff members at member institutions to explore specific competencies essential for practitioners. Our colleagues (Mylea Braun from Student Wellness Center; Jenna Morgan, Genevieve Presley, and Veronica Ramirez from Residence Life; and Elizabeth Parkman from Student Activities) will attend webinars to discuss issues, trends, and promising practices within the field, and will be matched in a group with a senior-level staff member to serve as their coach. Congratulations to them!

Campus Ministry
- As part of the National Eucharistic Revival, we held our first Eucharistic Procession on October 3rd. We sung Taizé hymns and litanies as we processed our residence halls and academic buildings, with blessings upon our campus.
- On October 4th, the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi (the patron saint of ecology, including animals), we had a ceremonial blessing of pets and animals (and yes, we also blessed photos of varied pets)!
- Collaborated with MCSJ, and logged in 15 hours at our first community service event (photos below) at the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist Life Education Center in Bridal Veil, Oregon.

Campus Safety
- A student position has been added for Campus Safety office support and parking enforcement: Campus Security Students, one student has been hired into the position, and the team is interviewing additional candidates to support Campus Safety functions and improve equity in campus parking enforcement.
- The Campus Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has been reformed and will be organizing a CERT training for the Spring 2024 semester. If any interest in participating in CERT training, contact Campus Safety.

Moreau Center for Service and Justice- In collaboration with Campus Ministry, our first Mission & Ministry event "Bless my Ride!" raised $555 from our bike sale to benefit our Immersion programs.
- Nine students and two staff engaged in a Rural Immersion in Yakama Valley (photos below). They learned about the history and tradition of the Yakama Nation, visited sustainable and organic farms, met local and immigrant farmworkers through organizations that help them have access to education, accurate information about their rights, and legal services. Almost all themes of Catholic Social Teaching were pertinent to the experience of this immersion, especially the care for God’s creation and the dignity and rights of workers.
| |
Residence Life- Eight staff from Residence Life attended the Student Conduct Association Fall Meeting at Western Oregon University.
- Sixteen students participated in a nature day of ecological education (photos below) with Dr. Sr. Damien Marie Savino, FSE (Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College). They hiked the Latourell Falls trail and visited Columbia River Gorge's Vista House.

Mehling Hall installed its second annual community mural, supporting the hall staff's chosen theme this year - board games!

Student Activities- The Beacon student reporters (Kate Cuadrado, Kimberly Cortez, Janea Melido) named as finalists for the 2023 Pinnacle Awards, a nationwide college journalism contest sponsored by the College Media Association.
| |
ASUP hosted its first Student Leader Mixer, with students from over nineteen groups! This was a great opportunity for student leaders to gather, share their goals, and get support from one another.
| |
Student Health Center- The Student Health Center (SHC) partnered with Safeway pharmacy to bring vaccines to campus. Over 400 vaccines, including influenza and the newest COVID vaccine, were administered to students, staff and faculty.
- As nursing students prepare for clinical rotations, SHC is assisting by providing vaccines and lab tests required by clinical sites. Providing this care on campus decreases barriers to nursing students completing clinical hours and progressing academically.
