DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY SHUTDOWN ONGOING
The Department of Homeland Security shutdown has surpassed the record for the longest experienced by any part of the federal government, and the House and Senate are both on a two-week recess. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Friday rejected the Senate‑passed bill that would fund much of the Department of Homeland Security while excluding immigration enforcement activities. Instead, Johnson proposed advancing a continuing resolution to fund the entire department for eight weeks, extending operations through May 22. The Speaker said the House would vote on the stopgap measure as soon as possible, marking a fourth House attempt to fund DHS in full. President Donald Trump signed an executive order that would provide TSA agents with back pay, though, with Congress on recess, it remains unclear how the situation will be resolved.
