AGS Board of Directors
Dr. Mark Supiano recently concluded his service on the AGS Board of Directors. The AGS Board provides fiduciary oversight for the Society and works collaboratively with the CEO and staff to advance AGS priorities. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the society, responding to emerging issues, interpreting the organization’s mission to the public, and establishing and maintaining programs relevant to the Society’s strategic vision. Dr. Supiano’s term on the AGS Board included service as AGS President. We thank Dr. Supiano for his dedicated service and leadership to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of all older people.
Timothy Farrell MD, AGSF, CPAFH, Geriatrics Division Associate Chief for Age-Friendly Care, was elected to the AGS Board of Directors for a 3-year term beginning in 2026 (see AGS Announces 2026 Election Results for its Board of Directors and Nominating Committee | American Geriatrics Society).

CMS Measure Attestation
The University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative submitted recommendations for University of Utah Health’s calendar year 2025 attestation to the CMS Age-Friendly Hospital Measure domains. Formal attestation occurred on May 14, 2026. Please contact Heather Podolan if you are interested in joining an interprofessional workgroup that will be preparing for calendar year 2026 attestation.

The Annual American Aging Association Meeting will take place this summer in Provo UT (Jun 2-6) with the theme of “Geroscience from Discovery to Application”. The American Aging Association Society is made up of researchers and lay persons dedicated to the study of aging from basic science to clinical translation and represents one of main societies in the US focused on geroscience.

UCOA Spring 2026 – Quarterly Summit
Sarah Bauman of the Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) was welcomed as the newest statutory member appointed to the Commission representing the technology and data sector. Her bio and resume are on the UCOA website.
Partner updates include a review of post legislative, difficulties, and where we need to focus on the interim sessions. Nels Holmgren gave an update on the pending report out of the W.I.S.E. initiative workgroups. We should expect to see the report by early June for a period to garner public feedback. Jennifer Morgan updated the group on the progress and timeline of the state caregiver resource site and production items and learning tools. RHTP funding opportunities are rolling out very slowly and only few have opened for application.
Executive Director Ence submitted a proposal for a three-hour preconference session to the Rural Health Association of Utah for the November conference. The focus will be on older adult health care. The outline will be shared with an ad hoc committee next week shape the topics and speakers. Input is welcome.
Master Plan on Aging topic presentations included emergency preparedness expert Linda Milne, with an offer for live presentations; support group status of for grandparents raising grandchildren through the Children Service Society; funding and program status of the Women’s Leadership project with Amy Anderson; review of the May 1 advance directive document changes and rationale with Utah Uniform Law Commissioner Mary Gay Taylor Jones and Jennifer Brennan, U HSC legal counsel; Addressing updates and corrections to the Utah OLST agreement now underway; Lauren Cole of Wasatch Advocates for Livable Communities presented on their organization’s efforts to improve zoning and regulations to improve inventory of affordable housing.
The final presentation was an overview of Dentacor, an innovative and cost-effective dental care for older adults that need a variety of services and are Medicaid eligible. Clinic demand is growing and new sites for weekly clinics are needed. Currently in SLC there are three sites managing patients one day each Tue-Thu.

Important upcoming events include June 16 Home and Hospice Association of Utah conference; June 16 10 AM, sixth annual Utah Elder Abuse Awareness Day – this year Dr. Tim Farrell is keynote presenter.
Other Partner Engagements
UCOA is working with Comagine Health and other partners to develop a proposal around Community Care Hubs. More to come. Ence recorded the welcome video to a new series of training sessions from Adult Protective Services. Ence also met with Deputy Director Tony Hales at DHHS and DAAS leader Holmgren on the current collaboration with One Utah Health Collaborative and a top priority item on a universal advance care planning repository. This has been an objective for over ten years, but we have a consortium of stakeholders that can make it happen this round. Ence is also working on scholar projects with three DNP candidates from the CON in conjunction with the master plan and setting measurable and baselines for legislative tracking and reporting on key outcomes. Ence attended the ADRD Coordinating Council and an online seminar on Fighting Evictions in Nursing Homes.

The Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), the American Federation for Aging Research, and the John A. Hartford Foundation, are collaborating on this initiative to develop of a cadre of talented scientists prepared and willing to take an active leadership role in transformative change that will lead to improved health care outcomes.
Emerging leaders are clinically trained (primarily physician) early-stage investigators who have begun to establish research careers and have shown signs of leadership potential who will use this award to further develop the tools, skills and resources to have a significant impact in their field of expertise.
