When Emilio walks through the doors of the Emilson YMCA, he does more than show up for a workout—he brings light and resilience that lifts everyone around him.
In 2021, Emilio had a stroke during scheduled heart surgery that left him completely paralyzed. For three months, he was unable to move. Since then, he’s dedicated himself to recovery through physical and occupational therapy—working each day to regain strength, mobility, and independence.
For the past two years, the South Shore YMCA’s Adaptive Fitness Partnership Program has become a key part of that journey. Through one-on-one support from volunteer and staff trainers in the fitness center and the pool, Emilio has found more than just a place to exercise—he’s found a connection. “This has been the most wonderful experience,” he shared. “Meeting people who’ve gone through the same health problems and having volunteers working with you in the gym and the pool—it’s fantastic.”
The program is built on trust, compassion, and community—helping individuals like Emilio move forward at their own pace, surrounded by people who care. “Everything the volunteers and staff do is to help someone who needs care, to help us get stronger,” Emilio said. “Thanks to the YMCA and the Partnership Program, I feel that my health is improving a lot.”
Each week, Emilio returns to the Y with determination, gratitude, and his signature smile. His presence is a reminder of what’s possible when people come together to lift one another up. “I think this is the most wonderful thing I could do for myself,” he said.
This June, we’re raising awareness for the South Shore YMCA Adaptive Fitness Partnership Program. To learn more or find out how you can support this life-changing program, visit ssymca.org/partnership.
