Teaching Tips: End of the Semester

This is the part of the semester where you are wrapping up the classes you are teaching this term, but also when you start planning for the next time you teach. Here are some tips that might help you get through this busy time:

  • Remind your students about end-of-semester course evaluations. Consider giving students 5-7 minutes during class to fill out evaluations. Here are tips to interpret students' feedback from Harvard University’s teaching center.
  • UC Berkeley's Center for Teaching and Learning has some great ideas for the last day of class. For example, you can talk about what went great or not so great in your class, or you could review your topics pointing out how those relate to each other.
  • The Deadline Dilemma from The Chronicle gives insights about giving flexibility but providing structure.
  • For planning your next semester’s class, see this article about reducing content in your course design and these high-impact teaching tips.
  • Worried about cheating? Inside Higher Ed did an overview of a study which found that six low effort interventions used throughout the course significantly increased academic integrity in students.
  • Building community in the college classroom reduces cheating and supports students in many different ways.

Denmo's Recording Workshop

Denmo Ibrahim, Arab American playwright designed a workshop on empathy and performance. Here is the recording for the intro message to help you prepare for the next meetings. There will be 2 more meetings in February (details to follow).

Crafting Stories That Sing: A Masterclass in Empathy, Performance, and Discover with Denmo Ibrahim

This masterclass offers an immersive exploration of storytelling through testimony, found images, performance, and lived experience. Participants will discover what makes a story resonate, explore the narratives that captivate us, and stand in the vulnerability of truth and fiction. Each participant will craft a 10-minute piece—a start, middle, or end of something larger. Together, we will develop and refine these works in class, leading to a final staged reading of new stories. This masterclass builds empathy, sharpens creative instincts, and helps stories come alive—for both the actor and the audience.

No experience required. Open to faculty and students.

As you managing the end of the semester and planning your next class, you can make an appointment for a 30-min, 60-min, course redesign project, or GenAI consultation:
