Dear Students and Parents,
The California Faculty Association (CFA), representing professors, lecturers, coaches, librarians, and counselors at the CSU, has called for a work-stoppage strike between January 22 and January 26, 2024. This coincides with the beginning of the Spring Semester at Sacramento State. The Teamsters union, which represents our skilled trades employees, has also announced a strike at this same time.
Our campus will remain open and operational to support all our students during this time regardless of strike activity.
The CSU has provided professors, lecturers, coaches, librarians, and counselors with a 5% general salary increase, the same amount offered and provided to the other employee groups with whom the CSU has reached agreement. The CSU has not concluded the bargaining process with Teamsters.
Sacramento State is taking steps to lessen the impact of the work-stoppage to students. The strike should not interfere with students’ ability to complete their courses and graduate on time. Some faculty will continue to hold classes, so students should check with their instructors about their individual class schedules and assignments. If a class or service (i.e., academic advising, office hours) is cancelled, you are welcome to share that information with us here so that we can best assure continuity and fulfillment of instruction.
As noted above, the campus will be open. Move-in day for the residence halls will not be affected. Students who live in residence halls will continue to be provided with all the usual services. The student union, library, and other student service centers will also remain open.
There will be picket lines. I acknowledge it can feel uncomfortable to cross a picket line. Please use an entrance that is the most suitable.
Because the strike coincides with the first week of classes, the enrollment schedule is modified to allow sufficient time to adjust your class schedule:
- Weeks 1-2: use MySacState to add/drop. For courses identified by the department as requiring instructor permission/consent, please complete an add form through OnBase. Note that processing add petitions may not begin until the 2nd week of instruction. Drops may be completed, without permission, through MySacState.
- Week 3: Adds/Drops require Add/Drop petition and instructor signature only.
- Week 4: Adds/Drops require Add/Drop petition and both instructor and Chair signature.
We remain committed to providing students with the highest quality educational experience while respecting employees right to strike. Your understanding and patience during this difficult period are greatly appreciated. We will notify you immediately if there are any changes.
Additional information is available on Sacramento State’s Strike Information webpage. If you have any questions or concerns surrounding strike activity, please contact Bill Hebert, Associate Vice President for Student Engagement & Success/Dean of Students (b.hebert@csus.edu). We look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
David Zeigler
Vice Provost for Student Academic Success (Interim)
