New research reveals that corporate social responsibility can serve as an “insurance policy” during crises, while also fostering employee trust and confidence. When companies with strong reputations for supporting charitable or environmental causes face a scandal or enact operational measures such as salary freezes or workforce reductions, employees' support for leadership is less affected, according to the researchers. Paper co-author Sandy Wayne, dean of the UIC College of Business Administration and professor of managerial studies, can discuss the findings and corporate social responsibility as a strategic risk management tool.

Rising cannabis-related ER visits |
As legal recreational cannabis use expands nationwide, a new study in JAMA Network Open from the UIC Jane Addams College of Social Work reveals a troubling trend that cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS, which presents severe vomiting tied to chronic cannabis use, is accounting for a growing share of emergency room visits, especially among younger adults. UIC researchers James Swartz, professor of social work, and Dana Franceschini, a doctoral student in social work, note that increased awareness and improved diagnostic practices underscore the need for continued vigilance as legalization evolves. Both are available for comment on the study’s findings and the public health implications of CHS.
