A Message from Staff Council President, Mindy Galvan |
Greetings GW Staff,
I am honored to write to you as the third president of the GW Staff Council. For those who may not know me, I have been a staff member at GW for six years working in graduate admissions. I am also an alumni and current student working toward a doctorate degree in higher education administration. Still, one of my favorite roles at the university is being a GW mom of a first-year business student.
I joined the inaugural Staff Council in 2023 as the Parliamentarian because I believe staff are integral to the success of any university and deserve to have a voice in spaces where administrative decisions are being made. Last year as Staff Council Vice President, I had the opportunity to listen to staff across the university and to build meaningful relationships with university leadership, connections that will be instrumental to our success this year.
Throughout December, I invited incoming executive council members and staff representatives to share their goals for the council in 2026. After reviewing all submissions, I have compiled the following three main goals to serve as a strong starting point. I hope you will partner with us in achieving these goals by joining a committee or volunteering to support an event or professional development opportunity.
To keep you updated on the Council’s work throughout the year, we will provide updates through our monthly newsletter, sharing what we are working on as a Council and within our committees, along with short surveys to hear directly from staff on key issues.
I look forward to continuing our mission to support GW staff and to fostering a community where everyone feels valued and heard.
Sincerely,
Mindy Galván

GW Staff Council 2026 Goals |
|
|
- Staff Merit
- Continue to advocate for annual merit increases and a flat merit rate for all GW staff, decoupling merit increases from performance ratings and pursuing alternative methods of staff recognition
- From Silos to Bridges: Strengthening Cross-Campus Connection
- Offer professional development opportunities to include everyone across all GW schools and divisions
-
Support our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee which will be sponsoring Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) for all GW staff members throughout the University to connect and collaborate. ERGs are employee-led groups that foster belonging, support professional growth and promote inclusion for shared identity communities through mentorship, events, and workplace advocacy.
- Relationship with Administration
- Continue to ensure staff are represented on University working groups and committees.
- Work toward passing joint resolutions to emphasize Staff Council's critical voice in shared governance at GW.
-
Discuss relevant topics with University leaders at our monthly Staff Council meetings as part of a new segment called "Inside the Administration." Topics may include “get-to-know-you” questions, points raised from Staff Council survey data, or expand on discussions with Faculty Senate, Student Government Association, or University communications.

2026 Staff Council Goals Feedback |
|
|
|
The purpose of this survey is to gain feedback on the 2026 Staff Council Goals. We recognize that the contents of this survey can be sensitive and want to remind you that while we collect email addresses, they are only used to validate that the submitter is part of the GW community and will never be shared with anyone but the Staff Council Executive Officers. We will ask for consent before using specific comments for any outside purposes and will remove any identifying information.
As a reminder, all feedback is used to better determine the priorities of the Council. The more feedback we receive, the better we are able to support GW staff.
|
|
|
All feedback will be kept anonymous and will be used to guide initiatives within the Council. Guided by our Community Principles, we commit to being a Council that listens with intention, communicates with respect, and approaches our work with professionalism, curiosity, and care.

Development & Recognition Tip of the Month |
Turn growth into a habit, not an event: give staff one small stretch task each month, pair it with a quick check-in for feedback, and celebrate what they learned—not just the result. This keeps development practical, visible, and motivating.
