Teaching Tips: Managing Student Behaviors |

At UM-Dearborn we are finishing week 4 of the semester and this is the perfect time to reflect about classroom management; you have enough time to turn your class around or maybe just tweak a few things that need revision. Faculty and instructors can do certain things in the classroom to have a more conducive environment to learning such as building a classroom environment that supports social and emotional learning; one of the best ways is to anticipate what type of challenges your students might have in your class. Being proactive matters.
Unfortunately, when you are teaching in-person there are times when students might become disengaged, disrespectful or disruptive. It’s a good idea to take action and stop those behaviors as quickly as possible; the students are not going to stop themselves. Things tend to escalate; some behaviors could escalate enough to become dangerous. In any case avoid power struggles.
It is important to distinguish what kind of behaviors are disruptive from behaviors that can be dangerous. There is a big difference from arriving late to class or using the phone in class to something more serious like harassing another student.
