Isaiah 21:1-10

 A prophecy against the Desert by the Sea:

Like whirlwinds sweeping through the southland,
    an invader comes from the desert,
    from a land of terror.

2 A dire vision has been shown to me:
    The traitor betrays, the looter takes loot.
Elam, attack! Media, lay siege!
    I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.

3 At this my body is racked with pain,
    pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor;
I am staggered by what I hear,
    I am bewildered by what I see.
4 My heart falters,
    fear makes me tremble;
the twilight I longed for
    has become a horror to me.

5 They set the tables,
    they spread the rugs,
    they eat, they drink!
Get up, you officers,
    oil the shields!

6 This is what the Lord says to me:

“Go, post a lookout
    and have him report what he sees.
7 When he sees chariots
    with teams of horses,
riders on donkeys
    or riders on camels,
let him be alert,
    fully alert.”

8 And the lookout] shouted,

“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;
    every night I stay at my post.
9 Look, here comes a man in a chariot
    with a team of horses.
And he gives back the answer:
    ‘Babylon has fallen, has fallen!
All the images of its gods
    lie shattered on the ground!’”

10 My people who are crushed on the threshing floor,
    I tell you what I have heard
from the Lord Almighty,
    from the God of Israel.

New International Version (NIV)

Have you ever been through a sandstorm? Remember the movie Hidalgo when a dark cloud of sand came as a natural disaster. As a native of the Texas Panhandle, I had early experiences with these storms. Some years ago I was with my dad and one of my sons up in Colorado when a dust storm came in. It was memorable, but not in a good way. Darkness covered the earth like one of the plagues of Moses had come. But after the cloud blew through like a wall, the sun returned. There is hope beyond the storm.

Isaiah saw a sandstorm coming to blow against Babylon. Babylon threatened to conquer the Davidic dynasty and the southern kingdom. Isaiah saw a painful vision which wracked him with pain. The Babylonian soldiers presumed they would win, but the watchman waited for word. Then the news came: Babylon has fallen. All the images of its gods lie shattered on the ground. The people who lay crushed on the threshing floor in Jerusalem received the news straight from God through Isaiah. God promised that their captors would be destroyed someday. And they were.

I spoke with friends from Iran yesterday at church. After the protests which led to thousands being slain by the government, they took hope when the leaders of the regime were felled. Now they wait in hope and wonder if a change will come. A missionary friend and member of our church told of a movement in Iran among believers. Some from another country came and called together a prayer meeting, expecting 200 Iranian Christians to attend. Instead 16,000 believers came to the meeting.  They told my friend’s leadership team: teach us the truth and we will follow you. There is hope beyond the current dark storm. Keep looking for the light. Jesus is the hope of the whole world.

Pray with me:

Father, you alone know the darkness in the lives of those who read Isaiah with us today. In the darkness, we wonder whether we will ever see light again. Restore our hope today. Remind us that the wrong shall fail, the right prevail with peace on earth when Jesus returns. Help us to keep an eye on the sky so that we are ready when the glad shout rises. Come quickly Lord Jesus. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
