Age Friendly Corner

IHI Partnership Launches the University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative to a New Phase

In September 2025, the University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative concluded its 18-month engagement in the IHI Age-Friendly System-Wide Spread Collaborative (see University of Utah Health Selected for Nationwide Collaborative to Accelerate System-Wide Spread of Age-Friendly Care for Older Adults | University of Utah Health).  As one of 30 health systems participating in the IHI Collaborative, we shared best practices in age-friendly care with the other participating health systems, generated a new capability to produce age-friendly 4Ms reports in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, developed the 4Ms Navigator in Epic, and worked towards building an age-friendly culture by launching the “Say This Instead” anti-ageism campaign.

Going forward, the University of Utah Age-Friendly Collaborative will continue to prepare the health system to meet the requirements of the CMS Age Friendly Hospital Measure, expand a cadre of age-friendly champions, continue to partner with multiple groups across campus including the Patient Experience team, and advance research on Age-Friendly Learning Healthcare Systems.

We welcome your participation in our monthly U of U Age-Friendly Collaborative virtual meeting that occurs on the 3rd Friday of each month from 9:00 – 10:00 AM.  Please contact Please contact Heather Podolan (heather.podolan@hsc.utah.edu) for more information.

Utah Commission on Aging

UCOA testified before the interim Health and Human Services committee on the renewal of the Commission and the extension of the sunset date to June 30, 2031. After a brief introduction by Senator Kwan, Executive Director Ence talked about the ongoing work and the ongoing need for the Commission. The attendant motion was unanimously passed out of committee with a favorable recommendation. This positions the upcoming bill for positive renewal consideration in the 2026 legislative session.

Master Plan for Aging Engagements (MPA)

Executive Director Ence participated in a workshop with states working on a refresh of their master plan, Massachusetts and Maryland were highlighted. Ence also contributed to a PhD research project on the challenges of establishing an MPA conducted by K Hancock of Pennsylvania. Ence also continues to consult monthly with Lifetime Arts and its proposed federal legislation and advocacy efforts to promote and fund arts and aging programs.

UCOA is an integral part of the Utah Governor’s WISE initiative which work continues with the creation of four work groups, wealth, independence, security, and engagement and has recruited participant members from agencies across the state. UCOA has assisted in those recruitments and participates in each workgroup session to advise and ensure collaborative efforts with the MPA.

Community Programs, Advocacy, and Education

The Utah Creative Aging Coalition hosted its first annual event, Kaleidoscope, from August 30 to September 13 in various venues throughout the state. Hundreds of individuals participated in one or more of the events. The efforts received support from Lifetime Arts, Utah Division of Arts and Museums, and others to produce this event. UCOA provided website and accounting support throughout.

Ence participated in the Rocky Mountain Geriatric Conference with division colleagues. UCOA continues to monitor and pursue funding for broadband expansion and IT mentorship and outlining legislation strategies for guardianship rules with the WINGS program.

In partnership with SLCo AAA, SLCo Health, and other collaborators, UCOA co-sponsored and produced a successful falls prevention program on September 23 with about 100 attendees at the Wheeler Farm Education Center. Classes were taught on strength, balance, nutrition, etc. by many volunteers from partner organizations. AARP provided lunch for every attendee and exhibitor.
