We are pleased to welcome E. Steve Roach, M.D., as the new assistant dean for faculty academic affairs. A valuable contributor to Dell Medical School’s academic enterprise since joining the faculty in 2018, Dr. Roach brings extensive journal editorial experience and substantial leadership roles at Ohio State and UT Southwestern to this new leadership role in Faculty Academic Affairs.

His dedication to faculty advancement through mentorship and promoting external faculty recognition will be an important asset to our team as we advance our shared mission of supporting faculty success.

Biomedical Writing Workshop: Tips for Turning Abstracts Into Publications

Hosted by the Office of Faculty Academic Affairs and facilitated by E. Steve Roach, this writing workshop is designed to support faculty looking to brush up their writing skills or increase efficiency in their current writing practices. Topics include: 

  • Why Manuscripts are Rejected: Overcoming Barriers to Publication
  • Keeping Things Moving: Combating Writer’s Block
  • Creating Better Manuscripts: Less Is Often More
  • Responding to Reviews and Revising Your Manuscript
  • Rules of the Road: Permissions, Consents and Other Potholes

Reminder: Register for the ‘In Conversation Discussion Series’

The In Conversation Discussion Series kicks off this month with monthly virtual discussion panels featuring Dell Med faculty leading impactful initiatives across the enterprise. All faculty are invited to register for upcoming sessions:

  • Sept. 23: Demystifying Quality Improvement
    Veena Patel, Kate Remick and Margaret Whitney lead this discussion on the basics of conducing quality improvement projects. All — from beginners to the more experienced — are invited to join the conversation.

‘Leadership Starts Here’ Sessions This Fall

This monthly in-person workshop series is designed for faculty members to learn and exercise leadership competencies. All faculty are invited to register for upcoming sessions:

  • Oct. 9: Striving for Optimal Wellness Through Changing Times
    Jamie Dinwiddie explores a practical approach to overcoming adversity with resolve, grounded in the well-established tenets of awareness, stewardship, servanthood and responsiveness.
  • Nov. 11: Navigating Compromise, Standing Firm and Problem Solving
    Led by Stuart Wolf, this session focuses on the leadership skills needed to balance flexibility with adherence to core values. Attendees gain actionable tools to foster collaboration, uphold ethical standards and navigate complex challenges as emerging physician leaders.
  • Dec. 11: Operationalizing Physician Well-Being as a Leader
    Presented by Gregory Wallingford, this session explores both professional fulfillment and well-being and how to measure them, examining how leadership behaviors shape clinical culture and outcomes, and how to apply frameworks to assess and respond to well-being challenges.

Medical Education's Mobilizing Character Series: Caught, Taught & Sought

This workshop series features strategies for supporting learners’ character development and expression through daily teaching and feedback practices such as purposeful role modeling, character-related feedback, values-based discussions, storytelling and broadened perspective taking. Sessions are held 5:30-6:45 p.m. biweekly on Tuesdays via Zoom starting Sept. 23. Sign up for as many sessions as your schedule allows.

Professional Fulfillment & Well-Being Peer Support Program Launched

The Dell Med Peer Support Program offers confidential, compassionate support for physicians experiencing emotional or professional stressors, especially following adverse outcomes or other challenging events in the clinical setting. The Office of Professional Fulfillment and Well-Being is currently piloting the program with faculty members with future phases expanding access to additional roles.
