The CMU Swartz Center Hosts Second Family Business Leadership Speaker Series Event

| The Swartz Center hosted its second Family Business Leadership Speaker Series event with special guest Stephanie Hickman, President and CEO of Trice Construction Company, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Held at the Tepper School of Business in Simmons Auditorium, Stephanie shared her journey which began with her career as a labor attorney, utility executive and lobbyist.
She went on to explain how she acquired the construction company her family started in 1967, transforming it from a small residential construction company to an award-winning, utility infrastructure contractor serving Fortune 500 corporations, top 100 general and infrastructure contractors and major public entities. Her leadership led the company to becoming the first African American woman-owned construction firm awarded prime and multi-year contracts with companies such as Ameren, ComEd/Exelon, Nicor Gas, Peoples Gas and the Chicago Department of Transportation.
The next Family Business Leadership Speaker Series event will be held on March 22, 2023 with guest speaker Emily Sheetz, AVP Strategy, Sheetz.

NetBeez Releases 2023 State of Remote Work Report
NetBeez, provider of high performance network monitoring co-founded by Tepper School of Business alumnus Stefano Gridelli, Panickos Neophytou and Panos Vouzis, has released its 2023 State of Remote Work Report. The paper discusses the results of a survey on the current state of remote work and the experiences of employees who support remote work. The survey included a diverse group of 100 participants from various industries and job titles, with a majority being engineers.

Stratus Materials Emerges from Stealth to Launch Next-Generation Cathode Materials

Stratus Materials, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of next-generation cathode active materials for lithium-ion batteries, has come out of stealth. The company, previously operating as 33 Tech Inc., was founded in early 2022 to commercialize a set of highly promising, manganese-rich, cobalt-free cathode innovations by a team led by Dr. Jay Whitacre, a CMU professor and serial entrepreneur.

Nucleate Pittsburgh is a city-wide, non-profit dedicated to empowering biotech trainees to commercialize their research. It is a local chapter of the international non-profit, Nucleate. The first phase is focused on building a stronger biotech ecosystem for trainees. The launch event will be held on February 15 at the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship. The 2023 Spring Cohort Selected for the Customer Discovery Kickstart Program
The Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship’s Project Olympus Incubator has accepted nine startup teams to its February 2023 cohort of the Customer Discovery Kickstart, a program for early-stage startups to explore the feasibility of their business ideas.
Startup teams in the five-week program will learn about the fundamentals of customer discovery, conduct customer discovery interviews and receive coaching from experienced Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. Teams include graduate students and alumni from various CMU schools and departments including Dietrich College, School of Computer Science, College of Engineering, Tepper School of Business and Heinz College.
