| IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Akayla Wood
Akayla is a junior interior design major with a studio arts minor. She is the social chair for Colors in Unity, a student organization that offers a safe space for people of color in the LGBTQIA+ community. In this role, she manages all events, creates semester schedules, and works closely with Collegiate Women in Progress (CWIP). She is a member of the POIZ modeling group and a Welcome Week leader and is very involved with Student Affairs events and activities. Akayla is an active member of the DEI Alliance and is currently helping with the upcoming Unity Ball. She is a former member of the Pan-African Student Association (PASA) and the SEEDS program, and she served as an officer for the URBN Dance Group. Akayla has been described as a strong leader and problem-solver, as very creative and cheerful, and as always ready to encourage her peers. We thank you, Akayla!
Staff Spotlight: Marcia Briscoe
Marcia is a navigator within the University College. The Navigator program is designed to promote student success by providing support through individualized guidance, coaching, and mentorship. She serves as a single point of contact for her assigned students throughout their time at IUP and for their families, and she greatly enjoys inspiring and assisting them to achieve success. Marcia is a co-advisor for Collegiate Women in Progress (CWIP) and is a proponent of all diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives. This is evident in her many volunteer roles, including as a Crimson Guide, a helper in the Promising Scholars Program, a guest speaker for the American Language Institute’s Academic Literacy II course, a Community Standards board member, and a part of the IUP Community Response Team bench. Marcia was a presenter at the 53rd annual Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education. We thank you, Marcia!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
