Skokie Kicks Off Community-wide Tree Planting Initiative |
On Monday, the Village joined the U.S. Forest Service and GreenLatinos to kick off a community-wide initiative to plant 450 trees throughout Skokie over the next five years!
Celebrating shade: Community members braved the rain and took part in a tree planting ceremony and celebration at Masjid Madinatul Uloom, 7401 Lincoln Ave., one of the first locations to receive trees through the program. View photos on the Village’s Facebook or Instagram.
Increasing canopy coverage: The Village’s Environmental Sustainability Plan calls for increasing tree canopy coverage from 25.5 percent to 31 percent by 2040. Trees intercept rainwater, save homeowners on air conditioning costs, and provide many intangible economic, health and social benefits.

Absorbent Alleys: Village Completes Improvements at Three Locations
|
The Village recently completed construction of three new green alleys in Skokie.
What’s a “green alley”? Green alleys filter stormwater runoff and promote groundwater recharge, which reduces the burden on our sewer system. Collectively, these three new green alleys will provide nearly 158,000 gallons of stormwater storage every time it rains.
Alley locations: The Village identifies alleys for its Green Alley Program based on ongoing maintenance requirements, the alley’s drainage pattern, and available funding. Alleys that require significant Public Works resources, handle a high volume of traffic, and have lower potential for natural drainage are prioritized.
Alley funding: Alley improvements were partially funded by a $347,000 grant from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC).
