Composer Billy Childs and saxophonist Steven Banks.
|
There aren't many saxophone concertos that exist, let alone one written for a Black musician, by a Black composer, and commissioned by a group of major orchestras!
This month, saxophonist Steven Banks will perform the world premiere of Billy Childs' new saxophone concerto with the Kansas City Symphony. Classical KC's
Libby Hanssen spoke with Banks about the significance of this performance.

| When do you listen to Classical KC?
I listen in the car, I listen at home while washing dishes, folding laundry, and cooking, and I listen at work every day! My favorite program is Performance Today. My husband and I love to guess the Piano Puzzler on Wednesday evenings. We get a solid B-minus on our attempts.
What excites you about classical music?
Whatever is playing on Classical KC has the power to enhance my current reality or my fond memories. It can be the current propelling my stream of consciousness. Life is suddenly cinematic with classical music as the soundtrack.
What one recording/piece of music would you bring with you to a desert island?
If I were alone on the island, Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Vespers," because I would crave the sound of human voices. Rachmaninoff is almost as good as a lifeboat.
